SxS or O/U ---- Pros & Cons ???
      #29091 - 08/04/05 04:57 AM

With the exception of the fact that an O/U must be opened more to reload than a SxS, what are the other differences between them assuming equal quality? Strength? Ease of regulation? Durability?

I think the action of an U/O is probably stronger (think Boss or Purdy), but in regards to a rifle a SxS may be faster to load and is most defiantly more astatically pleasing.

I snap onto a targer better-faster with an o/u! I like the classic SXS, but shoot much better in fast moving scenarios with the o/u. Scoping the o/u seems a bit less problematic than with a sxs in my limited personal experience.

I now have three DR's...all o/u. My next will be a SXS in a heavy caliber; 470 on up. I feel that an o/u in calibers up to, and including 9,3X74r make a trimmer and nicer handling package all in all.

Personally, I can't stand U/O shotguns or rifles for one reason only:
I shoot with both eyes open, right eye dominant, and with an U/O the left eye sees the lower barrel and rib (as well as the top barrel), which totally distracts me. With a SxS, the right eye sees the sights, and the left eye sees only one barrel, hopefully pointing at the target!
SxSs rule!

I have heard it said that when building the rifle, the O/U is easier to regulate that the SxS. I'm not sure I see any reason why that should be so. In both types the muzzles would have to be moved up, down, or sideways relative to each other.

On the other hand, I suspect an O/U's regulation might be disturbed less by putting a scope on or taking it off. It might handle a change in load better.

Either type is strong enough to do the job if they are made right.

The SxS would be a bit easier and quicker to reload.

For my money the SxS looks far better.

My experience with two U/Os and one SxS is that they all cross when a scope is installed.
