I don't want to burst your bubble, but the chances of winning the lottery are better, than those of a non African getting a P.H. license. It has been done by a few individuals, but those who have, had extensive contacts to get the right strings pulled.

I had a swedish guy who did the ph course with me in RSA. The authorities was only prepared to grant his license for a year. He also had a hell of a job to get the ordance figured out, languge wise and the terminology. It is rather easy to name the different animals, tracking, trophy judging, trees and the other practical work was very difficult for him. He also had to rewrite some of the subject. Some of the things that is natural for us is skills foreigners must learn. I felt quite sorry for the guy, he had a real hard time on the course, but he eventually passed. What I must add, he imigrated to RSA and had a bussiness.

So yes under certain circumstances they will allow you to do it, but it will not be easy going. You will have to put in a lot of dedication and hard work. Most probably double of what we have to.

If you don't have residency in Botswana you can forget it -and even if you do, you had better be prepared to be examined by some of the finest PH's in Africa......They have some of the highest standards of any African country. ........hope that's not bad news!

Jaco,

don't know when you qualified but they no longer allow non SA residents to sit the PH exams.....they now apply the "Aliens Act" to non residents. I think they started to adopt this policy at least 5 or 6 years.

Mike,

you're right about it being very difficult for non Africa born people to gain a PH licence......but I managed it. There were no strings pulled and no friends in high places. I managed it through sheer pig headedness, a degree of stupidity and dogged determination.......... I just refused to give up and eventually got what I wanted....Perhaps because they got sick of my face and the sound of my voice on the telephone!

On the day I qualified I was told that all that I had achieved was the first step on the road to becoming a professional - Professional Hunter. 15 years later I still appreciate the wisdom of that comment.

My point is not meant to sound like a boast at all - (because there's nothing to boast about). My point is that if someone wants to do something hard enough he or she will find a way to do it. Never give up & never give in.
