404 Jeffery barrel contour/muzzle diameter
      #289625 - 31/10/16 03:48 AM

I have started to plan a rifle project in 404 Jeffery. I got a battered, old Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H some time ago. Both the barrel, and the montecarlo stock is not to my liking, so I have to build something more appealing.
I have been looking at the prewar Rigbys in 416, as well as Mr.Dorleacs 404 Jeffery-build. In my eyes, the styling of these rifles looks as a biggame rifle should.

Does anyone have any input on measurements of a barrel for 404Jeffery?
For starters I have been thinking of a barrel length of 24", and a muzzle diameter om 0.750".

Here's a photo of my .404 which is on a Brno 602 as well. Mine was also a .375 H&H which was in pretty bad condition when I got it. The action is a single square bridge and is totally devoid of any markings etc, I've never seen another one like it. The barrel on this rifle is 24" and has a muzzle diameter of just under .750". If I was doing it again I would go for a lighter weight barrel as this rifle all up weighs over 11lb, which is up around my .500 doubles weight. It doesn't need to be this heavy and after a long day carrying it around you get to feel every ounce of it. I think it is also a little front heavy so a lighter barrel might help here a little as well.
If the photos have downloaded properly you'll see the effectiveness of the .404. The chopped down tree was the second shot and it still hit the buff. How I didn't see that tree from 30 yards is beyond me
I like the .404 Jeffery it is a very effective cartridge on Buffalo and tips them over with ease.

IMO you can't get any better than an original Type A Mauser Sporter made for the English market. Here is one in 404, 9lbs all up with scope and loaded 3 + 1. Other gunmakers, famous or not, just took the same action, threw a barrel and stock on and attempted to duplicate the Type A Mauser. Some produced some fine sporters but I don't think any were better.

If you duplicated this you will have an ideal BG rifle. I can take some measurements of the barrel contour if you wish.

.375HH ZKK 602 is a good basis.
Look at: http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....5&fpart=all

Best.

Thanks for the input guys.

Eagle27, some measurements would be very nice.

Dorleac, your work is a great inpiration. I was thinking the original ZKK 602-barrel would be a on the light side for a 404, but now I will have to give that some consideration.

A quick mobile pic of the starting point. The barrel is cut down to 20", and the recoil lug and rear sight is removed from the barrel. As is, the weight is just a thad over 9.5Ib. I don't think I would want to have the finished rifle at more than 10Ib.

ZKK 602

G'Day Fella's,

Maral, when I'm out in my Funshop "and remember", I'll mike up the muzzle diameter of my .404 and report back to you.

Doh!

Here is a photo of my 1907 Jeffery 404 compared with one of the new Ruger 416's The size, weight and balance are very close

The 24 inch barrel taper is not a straight one. It measures 1.26 in front of the receiver and then has a slight bell shape. At 13" it measures .855 , then another incher further toward the muzzle it has a step down to .745 and then only tapers to .725 at the muzzle

The barrel is quite a bit lighter than Rigby used on it's 416

G'Day Fella's,

Maral, I did remember and the muzzle diameter of my .404 is as follows;
At the muzzle of the 24"/610mm barrel, the diameter is, 0.725" or 18.40mm.
It may be a Number 5 or 6 profile?

Hope that helps

Nice looking rifles 458Win, thank you for sharing the images!

Regards
Homer

Thank you very much for the input!

I will probably mix and match a little from the supplied measurements. Will post the final results!

I had a Brno 602 in 375 H&H. I had it re-bored and rifled to 416 Rigby. This rifle shot like a dream quite handy, recoil was quite manageable. The action needs modification to feed the 416's. There is probably an easier way to get a 416 Rigby however if you have the rifle and it is shot out, go for it.

Barrel contour

I have been discussing barrel dimensions with my gunsmith, and settled on measurements as this:
A: 1.22"
B: 2.00"
C: 1.06"
D: 0.70"
E: 24.0"

The drawing shows a straight taper between point C and D, but we will probably end up with a little more taper in the first half, and straightening it a bit towards the muzzle.
I have allways liked a small edge or step "highlighting" the transition from chamber area to tapered barrel.

Any comments?

Hi maral

Sorry I did not get back with measurements of my Type A Mauser barrel as I promised in my earlier post, I have been away a bit over the last few weeks and lost track of this discussion.

Just for comparison here are the measurements from my 404 barrel:

A: 1.25"
B: 1.33"
C: 1.03"
D: 0.67"
E: 24.0"

Not very different to what you have decided except you are going for a longer measurement for B.

Best wishes for your 404 build.
