Africa--corruption gone wild
      #289488 - 28/10/16 12:31 AM

Corruption has apparently taken even further steps in areas of Africa based on first hand reports from one of my closest friends who just returned from a 5 week Safari...

He told me of one incident where they got stopped in a road block..the law enforcement had a blow dryer YES, a blow dryer..with cord still attached..with a piece of card board tapped on with a speed written on it..stopped the truck..told them they were speeding and owed X number of rand to continue down the road... A FRICKEN BLOW DRYER... unbelievable...

OR, they will stop you and siphon out the fuel and then 2 km down the road are guys to sell you some more fuel at a crazy high price...

So how many hair follicles did they have to surrender in order to continue on their way?

Seriously, does one actually need to pay these bribes generally speaking? I understand that each situation is different. Personal experience suggests that with local accompanyment, one can sit back and either watch the money change hands or listen to the direct response of PFO......

What is the experience of others wrt to handing over money?

Mozambique is terrible in this regard.

Rip mentioned "Rand" thus I assume the blow dryer incedent happend in South Africa? I really find that story hard to believe.

But it can happend in very rural Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Last year flying from JFK - South Africa - Mozambique, a South African Airways guy stopped me as I was deplaneing in JoBerg. He said there was a problem with our rifle cases and he could probably get the ground crew to fix it but we did not have much time for the connecting flight .....

I took a picture of him with my cell phone and handed over $100, he wanted $100 from all three of us. I told him if the guns don't make it on I plane I'd call the president of SAA and send him the photo and story. Guns made it.

Did I do wrong? Yes I should have taken the picture and headed to see a manger of SAA but I chose to pay the hundred and not miss a connector or show up without guns. On a $40,000 trip who cares about another $100.

The shit heals have leverage and the only solution I see is to not take your own guns and rent. Safari would loose some of it's appeal.

Made a seven-hour road trip two weeks ago, from the north to Bulawayo with my PH. We were waved through many police road blocks because they were busy but got stopped four times and got fines at three of them, ten to twenty dollars each, what a crock of crap!

$100 extra on a $40000 safari... You right, one doesnt need that sort of crap....... BUT... It starts with a 100 and when they see they get away with it, in 5 years time it will be a 1000 for the next client

Africa and Dire Straights has one thing in common.... Money for nothing ;-)

Nothing is free in Africa..not even the chicks..

The song was evidently not intended for the Dark Continent..
