Are the 25.06 and .270 compatible
      #2889 - 21/05/03 02:58 AM

Last sunday at my farm i was shooting some wild dogs which are there in abundance and a real danger to the sheep and goats of the locals as well as the shepherd boys(one was badly mauled a couple of months back).I was using a 270 win. with 130 gr.bullets and after firing about 30 rounds i discovered, when picking up the empties, that i had also fired a few 25.06 bullets .I quickly examined my rifle to see if i had damaged it but it was just fine.Is it possible that these two caliber bullets are compatible and can be used in the same rifle i.e. the 270?I also have a 25.06 and thats how the mix up took place.

iqbal, no the two cartridges are not compatible.
They are similar in case dimentions and that's why it was possible to chamber and fire the 25-06 Rem round in the 270 Win chamber.
The 25-06 has a smaller bullet diameter than the 270.
.257" for the 25-06 and .277" for the 270.
It is NOT a safe practice to attempt to fire anything other than 270 Win cartridges in a rifle chambered for the 270 Winchester.

Igbal;

You are a very lucky man that you stuffed the .25-06 in the .270 and not vice versa, because you could been seriously injured.

Since the bore diameter for a .25-06 is .257" there was no problem for the bullet to travel done the bore a of .270 with a bore diameter of .277". You could have hopefully not been able to chamber a .270 Winchester round in a .25-06, if you could, on firing the result would be disasterous. You must taken very serious precautions if you reload using brass resized to a caliber different from the headstamp on the case. I ahve reached the point where I only use brass with the proper headstamp for my handloads. I have had one too many close calls.

Because the headspace is the same for these two rounds, you can fire a .25/'06 round in a .270 chamber, but it won't hit anything!! The bullets will just rattle up the barrel, to fly off just anywhere. However, the extracted fired case is now a .270 case, not a .25/'06 anymore!!

Both the 25-06, and the 270 Win, are really 25-06, and 277-06, and one must be very careful when loading for both. The 270 case can be resized in the 25-06 die, and becomes a 25-06, regardless of what the headstamp says, and when you fired the 25-06 in the 270 chamber, you fireformed the brass to 270 Win. You can spit farther than the difference between these two cartridges, for all practical purposes they are the same cartridge, BUT, ARE NOT interchable. It puzzels me, that in a place where it is not easy to own any kind of firearm, why anyone would have two different cartridges that are so much alike! I would pick which ever one you like the best, and trade, or rebarrel the other for something in the .30 cal, or maybe 7mm mag range, Either of these rifles can be re-barreled for something like 30-06, or even 300 Win Mag, and with one of the smaller of the rifles combined with the 300 Win Mag, you would have a far better range of game coverage!

DUGABOY1,thanks for the advice.Actually there is no bar in owning firearms around here,in fact there is a glut of all kinds of arms including the automatic ones like AKs,M16s,AR15s,etc. However we don't have good gunsmiths who could make the changes you suggested.I had bought the 25.06 but later when i found that it was not suitable for tougher animals like the ibex etc.i bought the 270.I then moved onto the 7mm.mag and 300 WB mag.
