Bending a stock to make a righty a lefty

Has anyone ever done this? Does it weaken the wood?

Bonanza,
Contact JJ at www.champlinarms.com.
He is real good at bending stocks.
He bent the stock down a little on my 450 No2.

Bonanza,

Believe it, stock bending is real, and good people do it. I have had three shotguns bent, and I am all the better for it.

First you have to have a professional fitting. That means spending some $$$$ to go to a shooting school or whatnot. I had a fitting with Keith Lupton, who could not have been better. Once you have done a fitting you will know your optimum dimensions. You can then have your shotties and rifles bent to the best approximation.

Go for it. It's the only way to fly.

I once had a best quality shottie imported from Australia. Everything was perfect in the deal, except when it came it had been bent for a lefty. Not anymore. It now fits me better than any shottie I own.

That illustrates you can bend and then bend back. The shottie is very very right-handed, from its beginning. No problem bending it back.

If you are a lefty, do it. Don't look back.

In reply to:

stock bending is real

Classic, Curl!

I have bent 3 stocks myself, its a piece of cake. All three were bent to alter drop at comb, not bent to alter cast, but obviously the same principle applies.

I remove the trigger-guard, then clamp the action-bar in a padded vice. A jig is then built with scrap timber so that a furniture-clamp can put pressure on the butt while hot linseed-oil is ladled over the wrist. As the wood heats up, a little pressure is applied to the clamp, all the while ladling the hot oil over the wrist. The secret is to work very slowly: I would take more than 30 mins to complete a 1/4-inch bend. When the required end-point is reached, the wrist is wiped down and the whole thing left in place for 24 hours or so.

One of the stocks I did moved back slightly, so I re-did it, and the second time it stayed put. The others were fine with one pass.

My first attempt was on a Cashmore sidelock that required a 3/8-inch reduction in drop at comb! No problems at all.

My N. Lajot set was cast for a lefty when I found it. I was able to talk the owner way down on price (about $1,500.00), accordingly. I had it bent to fit me perfectly...cost $45.00...
