Reloading .450/400 2 3/8
      #287072 - 28/08/16 02:21 AM

Since this section gets more traction than reloading, I thought I would post this here, too.

I have an interesting Belgian made rolling block that is chambered in what appears to be .450-400 2 3/8. Might be 10.25x69R, but the custom case guy made me cases from shortened .450-400 NE cases. Anyhoo, the correct dies for this are ridiculously expensive, especially since this is a gun I would shoot a few times a year. The bore is .415 and I had bullets cast by the guy who made the cases. a quick and dirty seating of bullet proved that this combo will not chamber.

So what are some options I have? I have never delved into paper patched bullets, although all of the collector cartridges for this round seem to be just that. Do I need a neck reamer in order to even seat a proper paper patched bullet in these cases?

Now back to dies. Could I use a Hornady Die Set 450/400 NE ground down to properly full length size the shorter cases? I will admit to being a lazy reloader and when things get too complicated tend to just move on to something else.

Any tips or advise appreciated.

You can try using a .409" bullet for a start, that is what I have for both my .450/400 3 1/4" rifles, one a double and one a Jeffery Farqharson

If that will chamber you should not need dies as the case should chamber without FL resizing
You would have to shoot it to see how accurate it is

Decap, load and use a vice (carefully!) to seat the bullets Q.E.D.!

I bought several F/L dies from CH4D including a .450/400" 3 1/4" which, when I take the decapping rod out, will size/seat/crimp. This would be ok for a single shot as a tight crimp unnecessary, but the wrong way round for your shorter cases

Good luck whatever you choose

Do a chamber cast ,then you will know for sure what you have .
Cast bullets are best at throat size ,if it has a throat ,some of the older rifles dont have a throat like modern firearms.
I suspect you may need to seat the bullet into the case further .
I ususlly make a dummy round from an empty case with a seated bullet ,and try and chamber it , keep adjusting the depth until it chambers .
When doing this check for rifling marks on the bullet.
I recommend CH4D dies I have quite a few sets for reloading obsolete cartridges , great people to talk to as well .

This is a nice rifle!
You might also look for 10,3x60R dies and components.
This is the metric designation for the same cartridge, still popular in Switzerland (in a Nitro version), in the canton Grraubünden.
That rear sight actually looks quite Swiss.
