Deer season in swing
      #2841 - 17/05/03 07:49 AM

Well by now the majority of sambar hunters would have been out quite a few times(some stalkers never stop all year)due to the winter conditions,i am waiting for news any day of another "big un" taken.
A monster stag was taken in NSW a week or so ago and i`m trying to get a pic of it to post.
Stags will still be up high on the tops and coming down at night, this makes it so much harder when up high and its good for snow or really cold weather to push them down--lot less ground to cover and marks are easier to track.
Pity i am stuck in Qld. for now and cant duck out the back door for a quick hunt.
The hound fella`s have been right into the deer of late but a lot of their animals taken are juveniles

Gryphon,

Of course, I cannot speak from experience, but the fellows from Sydney ADA have been haunting Victoria very frequently this year from what I heard. Can't say where they are going, would be betraying a club secret, but they said, that the edges of burn-off areas are producing a lot of sign and activity, though no-one has scored yet that I know of.

Although one of the fellas nailed a Fallow stag that "went 220", whatever that means, just last week. Saw a picture looked very nice. That picture really made me want to get back into the field again. I just want to taste deer meat again.

Oh, you know the difference between venison and deer meat? Venison is what you get at the restaurant or game preserve, while deer meat has rolled a 1000 feet side down of the canyon when shot, had to be dragged back up the hill and over 2 miles of wind falls and loose shale to the truck, hauled 5 miles to camp and left hung in the trees for a fews day till its time to pack up and head back to civilization. That is the difference according us Pennsylvania rednecks!!

Miller thats the sort of meat i have been eating most of my life
Of course the hunters will haunt the fire edges as thats where the deer will be,in a years time the burn will be that thick that you wont be able to hunt it at all which will give the deer some respite from us.

I had a look at your deer pictures link. Pretty good.

I was wondering what sort of rifle and caliber you use for your hunting. Especially for smabar.

sorry about that mate. i only had a bit of time and had a quick scan.

I reckon you are right on with the calibers. A 7mm and a .308NM. No need for all this big calibers. I reckon some of these blokes ought to learn how to shoot. Shooting a bigger gun doesn't fix a lack of shooting accuracy.

From your pics you proved there a good hunter can do it without all the BS

I shoot a 264 Win Mag and a 300 Weatherby Mag and reckon I could pretty much take on anything with them.

Mate has a 264 and [censored] its loud,i always wanted one but got my much loved 7mm instead as its a little better and legal. You are right on about big cals for sambar ---no need and i`m always arguing with quite a few that recommend big toys for deer.

Down here in Victoria, Australia. I know of alot of people that only stop when its too hot to walk the hills in fear of the dreaded joe blake! (snake). Deer season occording to a few of my sorces is going to be a good one. The fires have affected large areas of prime country but, there are still deer being taken by those that put in the effort.

As far as calibres, I used to shoot a 458 but have seen the light and now shoot a 7mm rem, much better at both ends!
