I like the Garmin with the large aerial.

I haven't used the Rino but have the Map60 and 62 and they are excellent in the thick bush (jungle etc) and seem durable enough for my geo's to have used in Tanzania.

With maps loaded you would be set.

I think I will look for a Garmin Rino 750. Some of the online info has improved in the meantime.

I note there are some other Garmin models quite similar, but do not understand often what exactly is different and all the variations. Happy for anyone to point why a different model might be better.

Perhaps the UHF aerial, fixed versus the option of a longer aerial is a key difference and very relevant issue for Australia? Don't know.

Will soon purchase a device, as I do need to play with it and use it a bit before using it in an outback location.

One annoying thing about the internet, is shops now rarely have first hand knowledge of products and can one on one explain a product. Because so much is sold with sales blurb on the internet instead competitive prices. And rarely stock any product on hand except very common ones.

Both of my GPS units have been Garmin and worked well. They are light years (okay, 15-20 actual years) apart but each did what I needed. The newer one is an Oregon model, 650 something. The Rhino does add a radio and other features, but I didn't need the radio function for what I was doing.

Lots of folks here are using an app for their phones instead of a GPS now (using the GPS chipset in the phone). I just downloaded one of them last week and will perhaps play with it. Supposedly it works well without cell coverage.
