Hunting Black Bear in Canada or the US of A?
      #280485 - 07/04/16 07:54 PM

Hey guys! Is it easier (as far as paperwork etc goes) to hunt black bear in Canada than the US? Or a good state? What are the costs like?

Wouldnt mind maybe some time giving it a go.
Any help greatly appreciated, but no rush

Cheers,
Troy.

I think it's actually easier (and much cheaper) to hunt in Canada, particularly with favourable $ exchange rate we currently are seeing. BC has loads of black bear, and Ontario is also pretty good, although some states have pretty good concentrations of black bear too. The US is a pain in the lower backside to import your guns, having to be the holder of a US issued hunting license and then apply to the BATF for a form 6. I believe Immigration Canada requires one to fill out a form to temporarily bring your guns in. In any event, you would be required to use the services of an outfitter. It's kinda weird: it's harder to get guns into the US, but once there, attitudes are much more welcoming wrt to firearms. In Canada, it's easier to get your guns in but once here, there are many tree hugging socialist nit wits that get their panties in a twist upon the mere mention of firearms. There are strict storage and transport laws throughout Canada.

Lots of guys from the States and Europe are return hunters to B.C. for bears and moose, elk, etcc. A close friend of mine has a business of storing firearms for Euro hunters and also working up accurate loads for them. A pretty cool and lucrative business for him - wish I'd thought of it.

Non-res hunters here must hire a guide & outfitter.

Non-res fishermen do not need a guide.

There is nothing I'd like better than taking some of you blokes out fishing for Northern Coho in September, or maybe steelhead fishing with fly rods on the Bulkley River in the fall or Kitimat River in the late Spring.

I cannot guide you for hunting, unfortunately. For black bears, Spring is best & around here, we have an over-abundance of black bears. Not a lot of locals hunt them and they give the tree planters a lot of grief.

North Carolina is pretty easy for an out of state hunter to go for black bear. I just get a license online. The seasons aren't long, but no guide required. About $300 I think, got to check for this fall.

There are some large ones in the Northern States, that's for sure. Rivaling the best from the Queen Charlotte Islands of B.C.

The best I have heard of there, was weighed (dead of course) on a beam scale in a logging camp at Jescatla logging camp at 875lbs.

All they eat there is salmon and deer. In the Animal world, they are the ace predator - no other predators on the island, besides humans.

I forget who the outfitter is, but a lot of the Sydney SCI guys have been using one particular Canadian outfitter for black bear for years.

I heard about the 770 lb PA bear. 3 or 4 years ago in NC a teenager shot a 700 lb one with a 243.
My buddy took a 400 lb boar 3 years ago in NC with a 7mm Mag. They aren't hard to kill and you don't need that much gun but, it was DRT. The average there has been 200 to 300 lbs I think.
I took a 300 pounder with my 9.3x57 and 232 grain Norma Vulkan. He went down, got up and tried to run, got maybe 10 feet and went down for good. I've had a sow with cubs keep showing up in my field who just looked at me and kept sniffing the ground for beans when I yelled at her. One year a young one kept wondering up the fire road everyday but he couldn't have gone more than 150 - 200 lbs so I kept passing on him. That's a pretty typical year as far as seeing sows with cubs and young ones. They aren't too smart nor afraid of people.

Lots of guides on the 'net if you do a search. Anyway, I always have deer meat and always see a bear whether I have a tag that year or not. They're so numerous there's no lottery or anything, you just pay for a tag.

The Moose hunting Techniques video with Michael talking to a fellow. At the end of the film, is buddy Keith about calling techniques. Well done, Keith. He's a moose hunter like no other.
