Bobbing of barrels ???
      #28039 - 20/03/05 01:39 PM

This may be sacreligious but I was looking at a nice 9.3x74R double and it had a lot going for it..price wasn't bad, nice engraving, nice wood, etc but .... it had 25 1/2" barrels and was very muzzle heavy and I wasn't all that thrilled about the sights.

My question is how much would be involved in cutting about 2" off the barrels and having them re-regulated and having new sights put on? Anyone ever done this? Anyone have a ball-park figure for how much it might cost?

Bill,
If the gun had 28" barrels I'd maybe consider shortening them but 25 1/2" is really a nice length.
Barrel heavyness can usually be corrected by CAREFULL weighting of the butstock with lead.

A "quick fix" is to use an elastic cartridge carrier which fits on the butstock and when filled with rounds tends to shift the balance rearward.
Personally I hate those things though!

I recently brought the balance back a little on my 470 by weighting the stock and the gun now balances perfectly for me but was always a little barrel heavy before this was done.
Stock weighting is far cheaper than barrel shortening and it really doesn't alter the originality of the metalwork and is completely hidden from view.

I had a sxs rigby 12g 2 1/2" that balanced funny. It had very unusual 31 " barrels. I had my gun smith make a steel plate that went under the recoil pad. The original had desintegrated. It was 1/8" thick and really helped. It a very unusual fix, but it worked.

good for you! a lesser mortal would have cut the barrels on a great gun and sacrificed its integrity.

Cutting the barrels on a double is a recipe for disaster IMO...to start with it would require re-regulation and that can run $300 to $600., and thats just for starters.
