Left hand rifles

I am new to nitroexpress. I am a left hand shooter and always interested in thoughts for rifles in Africa. Champlin Firearems has several left hand rifles for sale. They have a left hand 416 Fred Wells as well as a left hand 458 Lott, also a couple of 30 caliber magnums. I have made some posts on other big bore web sites with not much of responses. I understand left hand shooters are in the minority, but would appreciate some responses. Champlins web site is champlinarms.com. Then go to the "vault".

The Fred Wells .416 Hoffman would be the pick of them, for African use. Has the classic Mauser controlled round feed, and a very nice rifle, though pricy.

Have you been to the Big Bores forum over at Accurate Reloading? A few of us lefties post there from time to time. An archive search should bring up a few past threads on LH bolt actions for African game.

I just got my left handed 375 H&H up and running. I had it built on the Montana Rifle Company 1999 long action. If you are not familiar with the MRC action, it is very similar to the model 70. Several other companies build left handed big bore rifles, although the caliber selection is pretty much limited to the 375 and 458.

I am planning my next rifle and am going to use the MRC action again to build a 404 Jeffery. If funds permit I may order one of MRC's prohunter actions to build a truly big bore, a 500 Jeffery I think.

Ruger's left handed long action in 7mm mag or 300 Win Mag could easily be rebarreled to 416 Taylor, 425 Express, or 458 Win Mag. A used Ruger can usually be found at a reasonable price and is a good controlled round feed action.

I haven't checked Winchester's web site lately but they used to offer the 375 H&H, 458 Win Mag and I believe the 458 Lott in left hand. Remington of course is an option if you don't mind a push feed. I don't know about the Browning A-Bolt, I have seen the barrels on two of them split. Neither were obstructed so am justifiably shy of them.

Unfortunately, lefties have to have any interesting big bores built. I love my 375 H&H and it shoots like a varmint gun but would like to play with some other more interesting chamberings.

The big name custom/production outfits like Dakota will build you what ever you want. You might also check the gun library on the Cabela's web sight. They occasionally have used custom left handed rifles. Hope this helps. Good luck. Mart

Boddington is a lefty. Reading between the lines in 'Safari Rifles' will give you a few extra hints (with photos!) though the book is perhaps a little dated these days.

If all of the bolt gun companies would refuse to build LH actions, then lefties would be forced to use double rifles.

Would that be a bad thing?

I am left handed and own left handed bolt action rifles. The choice/selection used to be poor. Fortunately, things have greatly improved since the 1980s.

Focussing on controlled round feed - Mauser and pre 1964 type Winchester Mod 70 (& clones)there are rifles to suit just about everyone's pocket.

Mauser CRF

Zastava / Charles Daly are now offering / will soon a Mauser M98 in .375H&H. Barrelled actions and actions are also available. With this action length / bolt face, you could re-barrel to most DGR cartridges. they also make deer cartridge 30.06 & 7x57 length left hand actions.

Empire Rifles make a nice looking Mod 98 Standard action suitable for DGR and deer cartridges.

Win Mod 70 CRF & clones

Winchester / USRAC make their new classic in deer calibres plus with an action length suitable for .375H&Hmag. They used to advertise a .375H&H mag in left hand - Safari, but I could never find one. In the end, a purchased a .300Win Mag for the action. I am in the process of having built a 375 using a Williams one piece bottom metal, Shilen barrel. Present status - trying to sort out a stock.

Waffen Fabrik Hein make a nice rifle too. These are available in DG and deer calibres.

Dakota make a nice looking, in the classical style left hand rifle for both DG and deer.

I mention these makers because I think they represent the price end members for each group. After that, you are in the realms of custom actions / rifle makers. If you have to ask the price, you cannot afford it anyway territory.

Get a left-handed 338WM, re-barrel it for 416 Taylor and Bob's your uncle. Nuf' said.

You LH shooters are getting the short end of the deal. One of our major distibutors quit selling Weatherby rifles in LH in 2005. With 17% of the shooters being LHed I fail to see the reason the big companies are ignoring you.

We have had so many LH rifle requests we are building a site specifically for LH rifles LH Rifle Clearinghouse

Not complete yet but working on it!

Try Mark X Mausers - they are left handed.

I have a Custom Built LH Mark X Mauser Rifle in 500 Jeffrey
and it's a great gun (even though I'm not left handed !!!).
