I'm embarassed this is my first post...

Well...

I purchased this rifle a good while ago. Someone did not treat it too well I'm afraid, putting a ridiculous butt extension and drilling the side rail for a side scope mount (sans the mount). I took it apart and cleaned out the grime and dried oil, grease, etc. I installed a proper recoil bad (the stock is too short for anything else I'm afraid). Based on the maker's marks, I feel that this was made by Krieghoff. It's a beautiful little gun however, and I paid very little for it. I think it goes without saying, but I really do like it.

This is the embarassing part...

It was sold to me as an "8x57". I wasn't sure of the bore size (IS vs I bore), so when I did my initial chamber cast that was my main focus. The bore measures out at .321". So following the advice I have read here and other places, I decided to buy some light loaded US made 8x57, fire a few of those, and see if a standard .323" bullet would fit into the fired case. Well, it did. However, I noticed the primers were slightly bulged. I then looked at the necks, which were stretched somewhat. My first thought was excessive headspacing, but I felt that it would be odd that this rifle, which is completely serialized the same, would have excessive headspace. Although that is certainly still a possibility I suppose, another thought struck me. 8x60? Well I suppose that I'm lucky nothing bad happened while firing the rifle, but I thought I would put this out to the experts. What do you think? Here are a LOT of pictures. Additionally, I have some 8x60 coming in the mail.

I am no expert but I beleave you have already answered your own question. The 7.8 marking is actually the bore dia. before rifling. The 60 is the actual case length. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I forgot to mention but the 3mm you are missing on your caliper measurement is the rim of your case witch sets in the bolt face. It won't show up on your chamber cast.

Wayne,

Thank you. That's exactly what I was thinking.

Any thoughts on the Krieghoff production? I haven't found a lot of sporters made by Krieghoff...

I wouldn't know anything about it being a Krieghoff. Looks exactly like a Husquvarna. Is there a crest or any other markings on the top of the action.

I would say its a 8x60 (I bore so not 8x60S)
you can load it with a 8x57IS die set. brass can be made by using 30 06 cases or buy PRVI 8x60S cases.

what I found on your pics was this

H K remind me allways on Heinrich Krieghoff/Suhl, well the sign between was not looking like an anchor but the lower part was grind off.
take a look at this Krieghoff Parabellum

http://jamesdjulia.com/item/3094-358/

I never notice bevor the Krieghoff sign was a combination of an anchor with a sword.
not doubt this Mauser rifle was made by Krieghoff in Suhl ... but for Bernal Arms?

google is your friend:
https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/H-Krieghof...sp?lid=20079553
H. Krieghoff for Bernal Arms Co. Best Quality Model boxlock ejector SxS ha

"H. Krieghoff for Bernal Arms Co. Best Quality Model boxlock ejector SxS hammerless shotgun, 28 gauge, full/full choked, 30” blued barrels, finely engraved receiver with four gold game scenes, raised floral engraving on recoil shields, finely engraved breech end of barrels, deluxe checkered wood stocks with beavertail fore end, beautifully flame grained butt stock with Pachmayr hard rubber butt pad, single Miller trigger, 14-1/2” length of pull to end of butt pad, #14106 in overall fine condition showing the majority of its blue finish on the barrels, fine bores, crisp actions, gold barrel address “BERNAL ARMS HIGHEST QUALITY”; fine wood stocks, exceptional engraving; even the safety lever on the upper tang is finely checkered. (Modern). Est.: $10,000-$20,000."

so Krieghoff had a business relationship with Bernal Arms Co. in the united states, wherever this firm was.

Lancaster,

Thank you for confirming that for me. There is a combined HK on the bottom of the barrel as well.

In anyones opinion, if this rifle has a generous enough throat/neck area, would it be able to fire .323"/8.2mm bullets?

Additionally, and I know this is a long shot, but does anyone recognize that side scope mount hole pattern?

if it was MINE and the throat/neck area was large enough I would use 8mm S spitzer- boattail bullets in this
