brass is about as good as you will be able to do and sometimes that does not come fully formed.

The usual outlets (midwayusa, grafs etc.) usually have Bertram brass but I see they are both backordered now.

I have found that it is an easy cartridge to load for.

Could one simply repurpose .470NE brass and fire form it? I have used .470 brass for my .500NE 3" after cutting off a 1/4" with a small pipe cutter and then chamfering and deburring the case mouth. My understanding that the 500#2 has the same case head size as both the .470NE and .500NE 3", so assuming this is correct, it would be dead simple to fire form one's self a near endless supply of brass using the .470NE given that the OAL is 3 1/4" for both the 470NE and the 500#2

I have heard of that but both the 470 and 500 are quite a bit smaller at the base so my supposition is that you would need to be very precise with neck sizing to your chamber before fire forming to keep everything concentric. And that you would probably want too keep pressures low which the No.2 is I guess.

I have a bunch of 577/500 basic brass which can be used for the No.2 or the 3-1/8" as well as a set of forming dies. I have just started to try this and could certainly try a couple pieces of 470 to see how close it comes out.

Anybody know what to trim the basic cases to before reforming? I am finding that trimming to the correct pre-forming length would be much easier as the cases are cylindrical rather than trimming the tapered formed cases. I guess I will make up a system on the lathe to trim formed cases if I can't nail down a pre-form length.

Nope.
Using 470 brass is not even close.
Looks like it will make lovely 500/450 No.1s though!

Just formed some 500No.2 from the 577/500 basic.
Will post a new thread.

Two observations from experience:
1) the .500 #2 (.577-.500 #2 Express) is an oddball case, not easily made from any other.....
- .500 #2 base diameter .641" rim thickness .060"
- .577 Nitro/BPE base diameter .660" rim thickness .050"
It is possible with minor lathe work to make .577 3" into proper dimensions. Pretty much need a forming die as well if you go that route.
Rim may need to be built up thickness to headspace properly.

2) I have a Cogswell & Harrison 1870's Swinburne/Mahindra/Martini type action (2xx) serial number sporting rifle in .500-.450 #1:
470 NE brass does indeed form nicely into .500-.450 #1 2 3/4", the .470 NE rim is too thin, however one can make it headspace OK on the shoulder. The other alternative is build up the rim thickness with a washer or snap ring to fit the rim recess in the chamber.
My easiest solution for my rifle was using .50 3 1/4" Sharps basic and trimming/forming......worked great and the base diameter and rim dia/thickness was perfect. (There were no SAAMI/CIP chamber specs in those days!)

Took a while to post.
Pretty close to what Mike is talking about except I didn't need to trim the base dia.

Just thought about it while having a whiskey & soda.......
Ben is on track as well......the chambers from the old days were whatever the maker thought worked. There is every possibility that a simply resized and trimmed to length 577 3" would chamber in an original .577-.500 no2 if the chamber is even a tiny bit oversized in the base area.
Like I mentioned; no SAAMI or CIP in the 1800's

You are right about that!
I bet my Field will take cases made from regular 577NE. Seems to have a big chamber compared to the Turner.
