I was told that a hunter is allowed to bring 200 rounds of ammunition into South Africa. Is that true? Also, if I bring 2 guns, is it 200 rounds per gun or is it a total of 200 rounds between all guns. I hope you can clarify this for me. Thanks.

I suggest that you put them on a scale and find out how much they weigh. I believe you are limited to 11# of ammo total. Maybe somebody else can chime and give us an idea of 11# each rifle or total.

It is my understanding that the airlines permit a max of 11 lbs of ammunition in total to be transported. It appears from my reading of RSA's regulations you are restricted to 200 rounds total irrespective of caliber. In no case can you exceed the international airlines rule of 11 lbs for transport by air. That would mean 200 17Mach2's which would be well under the 11 lb rule but you could not take 200 470's because that would be in excess of the 11 lbs. You are talking about 2 regulations here one concerning airlines and one concerning import into RSA.

Airlines allow a maximum of 5 Kgs of ammo per passenger and it has to be packed in the manufacturers packaging or in those plastic containers that holds each round seperately.
If importing firearms into RSA you are allowed a maximum of 200 rounds of ammo per calibre and you are not allowed to bring in any more than 1 rifle of each calibre......there's an awful ot more to the regulations than that but you're outfitter should be telling you all this........he should also be making appropriate arrangements for the correct import of your firearms.....
If he's leaving you to your own devices it probably means you've booked with a less than reputable company.

I have been on safari three times. I have never taken over 100 rounds total, for two rifles, and have always brought over half of it home. What would the other hundred be for?
Now if I was going bird shooting, that would be a different story, but given the weight of shotgun ammo, you're better off buying it there.

You are limited to 11 pounds of ammo, and no amount of pleading, crying, or foot stomping can change that. I've never taken more than 60 rounds of ammo, and have never needed more than 20 for sighting in and hunting.
If you tell us what you're hunting for,(dangerous game, plains game, or a combination), we can provide suggestions for the number of solids and softs you might want to take.

I took a hundred total rounds last year on our plains game hunt. 60 for the 9.3x62 and 40 for the .405. Three rounds verified the zero of the 9.3 and six for a 3/4" change of zero for the .405. I shot five rounds at game and my PH shot a couple out of the .405 cause he'd never seen one.
IMHO the main thing is to pick at least one cartridge that you can replace locally if your luggage carrying the ammo is lost. The Feed, Seed and Farm Supply store in Hoedspruit said they could have had 9.3x62 in a couple of days if the need had arisen, luckily it didn't. My hunting partner and I both took rifles in 9.3x62, and as a backup Mike carried some of my ammo in his luggage and I carried some of his.
If a non hunter is going with you they too can carry an additional 5 kg of ammo in their luggage, you just need to claim all of it at customs.
I was just comfortable that I had contingency plans if the ammo had gone missing.

Thanks for the info guys. I have weighed my box of Remington 375 H&H and the scale says 2 pounds. The box of Winchester .405 ammo by Hornady weigh in at 1.8 pounds.
