lead on a double gun builder
      #275900 - 01/01/16 06:18 AM

Hi guys and happy holidays! I'm new to the forum and so this is my first post. I want to apologize if this has been asked before but here it goes. I've always been intrigued by double rifles and have always wanted one but could never justify spending the big dollars on one for the very little big game hunting I do. But I think I need to have one anyway just for fun's sake. Can anyone direct me to an individual who may be able to do a conversion for me? I have an older Italian 12ga sxs that I don't use that may be adequate enough for this job. I would like to stay local please ( i.e. Canada )Thanks for your help.

Hello NelloR:

Welcome to the forum. You will find the membership here very helpful and knowledgable and without the bad attitudes so prevalent on other forums.

There's a gentleman named Ron Vella that hails from somewhere around Oshawa I think that has done conversions of the type you seek. I have not personally handled his final product, but have seen pics/postings and it looks like he's very skilled at his craft. He would be worth a try.

I've also seen some rifle/shotgun conversions on display / for sale at one of the tables at the Ancaster gun show. You may find some leads there.

One more thought for you to ponder: Biilding a quality double rifle involves a very high degree of skill, time, and craftmanship and these virtues are diametrically opposed to the notion of inexpensive. A Baikal SxS rifle is one low cost way to enter the game @ around $1k..... There are recent threads here on the forum that discuss the virtues of these. I would suspect that it will be otherwise difficult to find much that wouldn't cost several thousand dollars. I don't know your point of reference as to what too expensive is, so it is hard to offer better guidance on this one.

Best,

Postman

Many shotguns are not suitable for the conversions.

Another possibility for your consideration would be to find an antique BPE double. Black Powder Express) They can be fired with smokeless safely and very effectively.

Some quick searching shows Elwood Epps selection,

But the shown prices seems very high to me.

Gary Flack in Langley, BC has made a few.

Another possibility for suitable actions, are the side lock BRNO's at www.tradeexcanada.com. Very reasonable pricing for decent SXS's.
