.350 Magnum Rigby-Mauser
      #274556 - 05/12/15 03:26 AM

I'm having some work done on my step-down receiver ring .350 Magnum Rigby-Mauser rifle due to a broken extractor and a headspace issue and my gunsmith is having issues with the bolt face, see pictures. My bolt is on the left in the picture with two bolts. He does not think this bolt will feed and extract the rimless cartridge reliably. This rifle was refinished sometime in the past and I'm wondering if the bolt face was modified. Can someone with a similar rifle compare their bolt face with the bolt face in the pictures and let me know if they are the same, or if they are different then what are the differences?

I broke the extractor the first time shooting the rifle so I really don't know if it functioned properly before I broke it.

If your rifle has the slant box magazine it is for the rimmed cartridge 400/350 310 grn bullet or 350 #2, same case as 400/350 with 225 grn bullet, see xausa's post showing the slant box magazine for the rimmed cartridge.

I am betting that your rifle was rechambered from the 400/350 to the 350 Magnum with no alterations to the bolt.

Yes your bolt has been set up for a rimmed cartridge by the look of it and the extractor blade will be hardly long enough (looks short in the photo) to enter the case head extractor groove and grab the rim of the rimless 350 Magnum case, hence probably the reason it has broken some of the blade off.
My Mauser bolt face shown below has been opened up from the smaller 10.75 Mauser rimless for the larger 404 Jeffery case which also being rimless did not need any alteration to the extractor other than stoning the blade toe a bit to allow a cartridge head to feed up onto the bolt face behind the blade.

Your extractor needs to be replaced. The rim dia. is .534 which is almost identical to the belted .375 H&H and other standard belted magnums(.532).
Because of the longer length of the Mauser magnum action you need a longer extractor than the standard Mauser 98 extractor which would also work with slight modification for magnum rim. The CZ550 magnum
.375 H&H extractor will fit and you can pick one up from CZ USA for $35 bucks . They have it in stock.
Hope this helps.

Hi m4220,

Page 216 of Speed's 'Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" reads "By 1905 Rigby had designed a new .350 rimless cartridge, and some rifles were made up on the step-down receiver ring actions with slanted magazine box, which worked perfectly even with the rimless shells. Later a new Square Bridge action with normal front ring was developed."

I have a photocopy of a photocopy of the original Rigby ledger from J. Roberts & Son showing Rigby originally sold the rifle as a .350 Magnum Mar 23rd, 1910.

I assume the .350 Magnum means the .350 Rigby rimless cartridge, unless Rigby used this designation to mean both the .350 Rigby rimless and the .350 Rigby No 2; otherwise, I'm sure this rifle is one of these step-down receiver ring actions with slanted magazine box chambered in the .350 rimless cartridge.

Hi Wanabebwana,
I have been looking at the extractor in the pictures and it looks kind of rough.

I received this update from the gunsmith on Jul 26, 2013. "...I have welded and re-fit your extractor...".

Jim,
Saw you broke the extractor upon 1st firing, have you cast the chamber to determine which case your rifle was built for or if the chamber was recut for the rimless case & extractor reshaped at that time? I measured both case types, 400/350= Rim dia. .525, Head dia. .470. 350 Magnum= Rim dia. .525, Extractor groove dia. .450, Head dia. .515.
Speeds book states
"By 1905 Rigby had designed a new .350 rimless cartridge, and some rifles were made up on the step-down receiver ring actions with slanted magazine box, which worked perfectly even with the rimless shells."
I take that as meaning that the bolt face, extractor, slantbox mag would work with either chambering, however the 2 chanberings are quite different, Head dia. .400/.350= .465..... .350 magnum .515
So as you can see the 350 magnum case differs quite a bit with having much more taper in the case body on the Rimless case. Which case were you using when the extractor broke? Appears you could chamber the rimmed case in a rimless chamber, however the chamber would be approx .045 dia. larger at the case head & that would cause quite a change in case dimensions upon firing & possibly sticky case upon extraction, hence broken extractor?
Just trying to help, working with a lot of unknowns here. I would certainly cast the chamber so I was sure which case the rifle was chambered for.

Hi m4220,
The rifle was refinished at least once in the past. I think the barrel was set back and re-chambered but the lead/throat was not recut. The cartridges I had reloaded did not chamber because the bullets hit the lands. After seating the bullets further into the case I was able to fire off a
few rounds. The cases fire formed as expected but about half the case neck had rifling engraved, hence the reason I think the barrel was set back. A new plain stock was installed. I found the original stock here on Nitroexpress. A member purchased the stock on ebay.

Here is the link:
http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat....true#Post218178

As you can see from the pictures of the original stock, the rifle must have been in sad shape. The magazine box had poor welding repairs. The bolt face was plated with a relatively soft material to cover up the headspace issue. I missed the bolt face plating when I purchased the rifle otherwise I never would have purchased it.

I'm having the rifle rebarreled but now the gunsmith is having misgivings about feeding and extracting cases with this bolt. He is not convinced it is the correct bolt for the .350 rimless Rigby.

I would really like to see pictures of the bolt face for a .350 Rigby No 2 and an original .350 rimless Rigby.

Jim,
Wish I could help you out with that but my .350 #2 is in a Double rifle.

Mine too
I never did take a picture of the bolt face on my Rigby 350 Mag. either. Sorry I can't be of more help.
