The First 458 Lott?
      #27425 - 07/03/05 03:37 PM

Can anyone tell me what year Jack Lott first got to test his 458 Lott cartridge.
I believe the first rifle chambered in this cartridge for Jack was a Ruger No1 by George Hoenig but I'm uncertain as to the year this took place.

I have a couple of magazine articles that I'll check tomorrow --seems like there were some dates in there--
and 1991 sticks in mind as one of them--

he concocted the Lott due to the fact he got ruffed up by a buff he shot with a 458 win mag in '58 or '59--I think the buff was shot 11 times with it and the PH's 375--but I'll have to double check that---chris

It was 1959 when he had the buff incident and it was 11 shots before the buff succumbed--Jack Lott sustained broken ribs, torn muscles, damaged eye, abrasions, cuts and bruises--

this article was written in 1991(that's where that date came from) and no other dates are given--I have one more magazine to check which I'll do later--chris

1971 was when he created it--here's an article link--

looks like 2003 is when Ruger offered it--

I still have one more magazine to check out in my garage--chris

I just read an old article by Jack Lott and the first rifle was a rechambered CZ 458.

The second was a rifle he built for a Swissair pilot. A left hand Remington 700! (Egads, don't let your children read this)

The third, I think, was the Ruger. He appearantly did the metal work and Hoenig handled the stocking.

He was kinda vague about the timeline except to say the Remington was done in 1977.

Previously he had developed the 460 G&A and a shorter 404 based 458 in the early '70's.

Hey 4seventy,

I've been reading your posts as you went through the purchase of your Whitworth, and now all this about the .458 Lott.

What ever happened to " Bye Bye Bolt Guns"?

You guys down under are an inspiration to us in the U.S. with your knowledge and proficiency with DR's. And, of course, with your seemingly endless opportunities to use them. Don't want to see no backsliding!

Your friend,

He dosen't mention a maple-stocked, single square-bridged mauser in that article, does he?

A friend of mine bought such a gun that (lettered) belonged to Jack Lott... the caliber, well you know.

There was a mention and picture of a Dumoulin Mauser but it was wearing "California English" walnut.

I'm kinda researching the 458 Lott right now, so if I come across anything, I'll post it here.

Curl,
No need to worry mate, I'm still double rifle crazy to the core!
I was reading an old article by Jack where he mentioned a #1 Ruger which sounded like it could have been the first 458 Lott.
I realized that I had not ever read when the cartridge was actually developed, hence this thread.
Actually the Whitworth has been awaiting bedding and meanwhile one of my regular clients has been pestering me to sell it to him.
I'm unsure what I'll do at this stage.
It is a nice rifle but it just aint anywhere near a double!
I'm still in bye bye bolt gun mode and am actually thinking that I haven't bought a double for over a year now so maybe I should do something about that!

4seventy,

Good reply!

Just thought I would rattle your chain a little. Everything has been fairly quiet on the DR threads for the past couple weeks.

Maybe you ought to shop for another DR. Sounds like you need a fix. I'm broke from too much shopping.

But I've been shooting regularly. Most recently last Saturday and Sunday.

Best regards,
Curl

I think Ol'e Jack pretty much copied the 450 Watts.
