Ivory Poaching
      #27393 - 07/03/05 07:25 AM

When reading another thread I remembered Kenya(?) had burned a huge pile of confiscated ivory about 15/20 years ago. Can anyone tell me the rationale behind this and what it did to future poaching activity, elephant populations, and ivory prices? Would it have been better to sell it on the open market in small batches over a long period of time or all of it at once? The money could have been tagged for conservation efforts.

It's the journey, not the destination.

It didn't do squat as far as stopping poaching at all. They were in the midst of begging for free UN money from the touchyfeely antihunting people who were funding some project or other.

Lo do they call to me,
They bid me take my place among
them in the Halls of Valhalla,
Where the brave may live forever.
