6.5 Remington Magnum

I really like the looks of the Rem 673 guide gun, it fits me great. I noticed that one of the calibers in it is the 6.5 Rem Mag. I feel like it would make a good woods rifle for deer and hogs.

I was wondering if anyone on here has one of the 673 guide guns and if so what do you think about it.

Also for those of you who have shot or hunted with a 6.5 Rem Mag in any rifle, what were your thoughts on them?
Was it accurate? etc..

...noticed that the new rem 673 has a 22 inch barrel...should be a light (combined with the ribbed barrel) and quick handling rifle for mountainous and heavily wooded areas...that, in addition to the laminated stock, should make for good value (tho also noticed the use of new rem cartridges, as opposed to the traditional calibre offerings, which may somewhat offset the longer-term savings)...would also be interested to hear from those who have actually hunted with the rifle...

Guess I could ask this again since then has been on here for 2 or 3 days now and not a single reply.

Is there anyone who has a Rem 673 guide gun in 6.5 Rem Mag or any other caliber, if so what do you think about it?

Also what do you think about the 6.5 Rem Mag period?

I have an original Remington Mod600 in .350RM......my son-in-law has a Mod673 in .350RM. The barrel on the 673 is 4" longer than the original and the 673 is heavier by quite a bit. The 673 is easy to shoot and the recoil is much less than my 600. The 6.5RM is a great cartridge but is a handloading proposition to get the most out of it. Those 6.5mm bullets have great SDs. The Mod673 seems to be well built and fitting was very good on this particular rifle. Lots of people don't like them......but try to find a cheap Mod600.......very handy rifle. I don't particularly care for the extra 4" of barrel on the 673s.

What is the twist rate in the 6.5? I tend to like the extra barrel length for that caliber, since it is designed as a far-shooter. It might make a heck of a sheep rifle.

The rate of twist is 1:9 for the 6.5RM in the Mod673. The rifle weighs in at around 7.5 lbs. The longer barrel certainly wouldn't hurt and the shorter 18" barrel on the original Mod600 was one of the criticisms, especially in the 6.5RM, that led to it's demise.

I like the Remington 6.5mm Mag. It is back in style these days as well! Right in tune with the Winchester shorties! I have a Remington 600, a flatbolt Ruger 77, and a Ruger single shot in 6.5mm Rem.Mag. The 600 and the 77 are 1 in 9" twists which is fine as I use 120gr or 125gr Nosler in them. The Ruger SS has a 1 in 8" twist and loves 140 and 160 gr bullets. I am throated to seat them out to bottom of neck and velocities rival the .264 Win Mag a little. Pretty good cartridge all in all over forty years now fooling with it.

I had a 6.5 Rem Mag in a m660 (20" Bl) back in 1970/71. While I used it mostly with 87gr. and 100gr. HP';s for groundhogs, a stiff load of 4831 and 140gr. Sierra's were also very accurate.
: Today, I'd use 120gr. XLC's, probably 4831SC and be very happy for all big game. The 120gr. XLC's will penetrate lenght-wise on British Columbian moose out to 300yds. at least.
: I would think the 22" bl. should get them moving up to 3,150fps to 3,200fps with top-end loads. Don't forget to start them .050" off the lands. RE-throating the chamber for .050" longer than the magazine body would be helpful for the "X"'s.
: Other than Barnes, I'd probably use 125gr. or 140gr. Partitions for everything.

I have a 673 guide gun in 350rem mag its a very nice rifle, comes up to the shoulder very comfotably and shoot good with factory ammo. It put 3 200gr remmie core-lokts touching each other at 100m. I would definatly recamend buying one. But havnt had any experiance with the 6.5
