Did anyone here manage to snag this?
http://www.simpsonltd.com/product_info.php?products_id=43853

From my limited double rifle knowledge, it seems like it went for a decent price.

Nice looking rifle but that is some severely oil soaked wood.

I don't know who scored on the Alex Henry, but the Rodda 6bore muzzle loader found a new home...

Found the buyer for the .577. Bought from SimpsonLtd and immediately relisted; http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=526737136

Edit: Was that you who got it, Huvius? Fired it?

That is the gun I bought but I didn't think it was the same gun.
Did anybody save the pictures from the Simpson listing?

Unfortunately I didn't save the pictures, but I am almost 100% positive it is the exact same gun, albeit with an added premium. I remember the forearm having the same wood damage on the left-hand side.

This is the best I can do; http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/se...=clnk&gl=us

I'll see if I can get full resolution on the pics, but unlikely.

I'll be...
Too bad I didn't see the ad sooner, would have saved me a bit...

Anyway, I still think what I payed was reasonable and the best part was that I sold another gun I wasn't crazy for anymore and got into one I am much more interested in for less money. I'd take that deal any day!

I should pull the locks and see what the wood looks like underneath. In hand, it looks more oily on the surface than a deep oiliness and the dark color is pretty much present throughout the stock rather than moreso at the head of the stock as is often encountered. Something I should check out though all the same.

One thing not mentioned in either ad is the weight of the rifle.
All up, it is 10lbs 12.4oz
The barrels alone weigh 4lbs 5.52oz
A pretty stout rifle which should make it very pleasant to shoot.

I agree, either price is reasonable. And that is definitely a sharp looking classic gun with some nice wood grain. I'll be interested in seeing a range report if you do one.

I've dealt with Clay before, and he seems to be a pretty decent guy.

I have traded with Clay a little over the years and agree that he is an upstanding and reasonable man to deal with.

I did remove the locks.
The bare wood underneath is more red in color than I expected and the oil doesn't look to be too bad IMO. Maybe at the very front end of the stock but not like I have witnessed in some I have seen in for repair.
Here are some pictures to see what the experts think:

What do you see (that is not discernable to the regular guys here like me) that tells you that it has been converted to rebound?
This gun has a later number than the 500 I have which all in all looks like a later gun than this stylistically.

Ben, we need to meet up when the weather is warmer to do some .577 3 1/4" BPE shooting. I'll bring my .577 Jeffery; 12 1/2 lbs and stamped for the 3 1/4" 6 1/2 Dram 650 grain load......

Steve; this makes two of us "unwashed" that want to know what indicates a converted lock?

What about the wood?
Steve, I remember seeing a shotgun stock at your shop that was truly soaked with oil.
I think this one doesn't look all that bad. What do you think?

I can tell some oil soaking is present, how bad it is I am unsure. Happy to look it over in person and offer my opinion though.

If you look directly behind the sear spring you can see the stop for the short leg of the original mainaspring.
