458 lott ammo
      #27271 - 05/03/05 05:16 PM

Can any of you guys measure your OAL(over all length) of your ammo and tell me what type--factory or reload--I'm trying to figure out if my A-Square stuff is longer than other factory stuff---A-square measures 3.512" long which is under the 3.6" maximum--but with my feeding prob I'm trying to eliminate some variables--chris

Here's the figures that I have for a couple of my hand loads:

Hornady Brass length: 2.765 in.
Woodleigh Solid 500 Gn. OAL: 3.615 in.
Swift A-Frame 500 Gn. OAL: 3.590

Both of these are crimped in the middle of the groove. I've not had any trouble with these in my Ruger RSM.

Since I don't have my dial calipers with me, I can't give you a quick measurement on my factory rounds. Sorry about that, maybe I'll be able to get to my safe and check that out some time soon(over 40 mi. away).

Chris,

Have you tried some Hornady factory loads? Maybe it the bullet shape that's giving you fits.

SteveH--not yet, even though I've been close to buying some--I've got 20 rounds each of 465 gr A-Square in the Lion Load(this load has a bad reputation for blowing up on game), Dead Tough and the Solids and I've got 2-300 bullets for reloading(Barnes and North Forks)--I really hate to go out and buy some more ammo, but I may have to bite the bullet and do so--chris

Hi,

Measurements

Hornady fact. soft
3.60

My reloads with Hornady bullets. FYI these are the
new Interbond P/N's but the cannelure is the same
distance back from the point of the bullet

soft #45049 3.624
hard #54077 3.610

All cycle through my Ruger RSM with no problems as
did the Woodleighs but I don't have any woodys
loaded up at the moment so I can't measure them.

Thanks 510 for the info---

all the ammo being posted is longer than the A-square which I find disconcerting--sure was hoping it was the other way around--I wonder how this thing fed with anything---chris

Chris,

A couple of questions...

I use to live in S.F. (42nd Ave. below Balboa) where are you?

What brand of gun?

Are the rounds crimped?

Where does the round jamb/handup in the feed process?

Do all rounds have a problem? or just first or last or only those from left or right feed rail, or?

Roi

510--I live on 15th Ave & Lincoln

gun is a CZ I bought used--had a bunch of gunsmith work done to it--

yes to the crimp--

the first and third rounds get stuck everytime and the 2nd round sometimes-the last two rounds have no problems-the belt of the round gets stuck in the feed rail right before it is supposed to pop up into the bolt--it's not the extractor--the right side is where they mostly get stuck--- also they are sticking on the ramp and the end of bullet looks to be pushed up tight to the top of the chamber--

the more I think about it the more it seems to be in the mag box--I think it's holding the rounds so tight that they can't move--the follower works ok to push them up, eventhough I'd like a stronger spring(will be here soon), but for some reason they don't move down just a hair when the round starts to get to the end of the feed rail-it's like they're pinched just enuff to hold in place and not move down-so I'll probably wittle away on the mag box some to see if this works and possibly polish the snot out of the feed rail sides before I try anything else---chris

I guess another measurement of the where the feed rail step is would make sense--that would tell me that the step is in the right spot--chris

Chris,

Ah hah, on the other side of GGpark.

It "could" be magazine follower and or feed rails or feed ramp or maybe a rough spot on the bolt face or "God only knows".

I would run my finger underneath the right (and left) feed rail to see if there might be a little ity bity rough spot.

BUT it sure sounds like too much spring tension to me given that the last 2 rounds feed okay. Or the right rail has been filed back too much and the bullet nose points up too high or maybe a little of both. Could also be feed ramp but that normally shows up as "it feeds okay when cycled slowly but not when he bolt is worked fast".

Given that a lot of "gunsmiths" have been "working" on it the idea of sending to CZ-usa comes to mind. It might have had the wrong follower or spring installed when it was built and instead of sending back to CZ guys just kept hacking on it to try and "fix it". It most certainly wouldn't hurt to give them a call. After all they built the gun to start with...

Please do let me know what the solution is.

Roi

I called CZ and they sent me another follower spring--I also have a stronger spring coming--I tried the new spring and same result--so I if the stronger spring doesn't work then I can cross that off the list

done the finger trick on the rail--no ruff spots--but I think I may polish it more--

the ramp I've worked on to take the hump out of it and that helped a lot--

didn't think about the follower when I talked to CZ--looks like I'll make another call to get one--

I don't think the rail has been cut, but I do have this thought that since the gun started life as a 458 win mag, that maybe just maybe the rail step needed to be cut back a hair also and didn't get done--hence my question about the measurement of where the cut is---

the last gunsmith just checked the rifle out to make sure there were no major quirks and he shot it and he said it fed fine, but it wasn't A-square ammo --I'm going to call him also and see and see what he thinks at this stage-- chris

I think it's the actual bullet now as they're dinged from the chamber when trying to feed them--see my last post in the other thread I started concerning this---chris

IT IS THE A-SQUARE AMMO that is causing me fits--I decided to see if I could, by hand, just insert some NF and Barnes bullets into some once fired brass I just received off of ebay--I was able to and so no problems with these feeding and I even had the barnes stuff out to length 3.7+ and they fed--it's the very round nose that's the problem on the A-Square loads---so I either try and sell this stuff, keep massaging the ramp or cut the relief in the top of the belt stop in the chamber, send it to the smith and let him work it over--of take $260 worth of ammo and shoot it up for brass--I guess I could keep the lion loads and send the other's back--I may do that--we shall see--at least I have my answer to the prob--looks like I need to get to reloading--chris
