new copper remover/gun cleaner
      #27239 - 04/03/05 02:12 PM

A friend recently recomended a new foaming copper remover. "Knockout bore cleaning foam" marketed by Forrest Professional. Just gave it a try on a fouled .458 Winchester. Fired Barnes monometal solids and X bullets. IT really works and is very easy to get a bore really clean. Filled the bore up with the foam, let sit for 30 minutes and after four treatments, the bore is comming out clean. This stuff appears to really work. You guy"s may want to look for it and give it a try. I found it at a Fleet Farm locally.

Not surprising that a number of firms would jump on the 'Wipe-out' bandwagon. Its a bloody good concept.

Perhaps a bit of healthy competition will help get the price down!

Check your "Knockout..." for amonia.

FWIW - Wipe Out has none.

New Guy; The Knockout foam cleaner is non toxic and contains no ammonia. Also non abrasive. It just works really well and I paid 7.00 a can. Evidently, others also find a it works, as when I went back to hoard a few cans they were down to one. There were about 15 cans on the first trip. I requested that they order some more and keep stocking it.

Agreed - that's what i said above, wipe out has none.

and i certainly feel better about letting it sit overnight in my barrels.

i would like to know where you're getting it for 7.00/can though.

my experience is as such...

let it sit first night and all copper comes out (blue liquid)

let it sit a second night and black comes out on the patch (powder)

let it sit a third night and the patches come out white.

takes about 10-patches and no brushes.

Is this something that you plug the barrels and fill them or do you just spray in and wait? And also is a patch the only thing use or is there a brush at some point?

You do not plug the barrel, just squirt it in untill the foam comes out the muzzle. Let sit for 20-30 minutes and run patch thru. Then light brushing and repeat. Run 3 or 4 more patches thru and it comes out clean. Dry and oil. Stand upside down and let excess oil run out the muzzle and you are done. Works great. Have found it at local Fleet Farm and also Gander Mountain carries it in my area.

In reply to:

do not plug the barrel

I can't imagine the mess if you didn't plug the chamber of a bolt-gun before using this stuff. Much easier with a double, after removing the barrel-group.

Its truly wonderful stuff, but you need to work out a good technique. Paper towel (or kitchen-paper for those east of the Pacific!) is worth its weight in gold when using Wipeout! These days I plug the chambers, then squirt in the foam, then quickly plug the muzzles. Saves a lot of mess.

Here's a chuckle: the first time I used the stuff on my stumpy .577, it squirted straight through the barrels, across my loading room, and formed an obscene white frothy deposit on the wall next to the phone!
Plugging the breeches is crucial for the genuine big-bores!

Use a Clear Plastic Tube on the can of wipe out and put in the foam from the chamber end.

The Plastic tube acts as a Sealer - shave the end of the tube that goes in the barrel with a
pencil sharpener and it creates a really good seal.

Bloody good idea, mate.
Actually, I remember you telling me this once: in one ear and out the other.... Could have been something to do with the logistics of stepping up from the 1/4-inch nozzle to .40, .45, .47 and .577! Also hard to find a pencil-sharpener for 0.4 to 0.6 dia pencils!!!

OK, Ok, I will give it a go!

Marrakai,

You have my 3 original Plastic tubes up there - I left them with you - probably in your shed.

One of them is a .22 - 308 cal tube
One of them is a .303 - 40 cal tube
One of them is a .45 + cal tube.

If you haven't got them, I'll post 3 up to you.

I have tried Wipe OUt and Forrest foam, liked the wipe out much better....Have not used Knockout by Forrest....

I put a piece of 15" surgical tubing over the nipple of the Wipe out can, plug the chamber insert the tubing and give it a quick squirt, the foam will push the tubing back out of the bore and you will have a full boren of foam....

I like the Wipe Out, it's a great product...I didn't like the Forrest product...

Wipe Out is good stuff. Yes it can be messy but with practice you can reduce the waste. I like it because you spray it in and let IT do the work. I usually do multiple applications but that's fine. Squirt it in, let it sit, patch out, reapply, wait and patch out and then apply break free or such. I would rather do this than spend much more time scrubbing out the bore with a strong solvent and a brush.

I have used Wipe Out on rifles from 17HMR to 458 Lott and have drastically reduced my time and effort cleaning out my bores. I wish my local dealers would carry it but alas they don't. If you buy 12 cans from JPaul the cost/shipping brings it down a bit.

Ray,

you say you didn't like the forrest cleaner but didn't say why, was it less effective?

I've used forrest a lot and find it excellent. I have nothing to compare it to as I have never seen Wipeout and think it is probably unavailable here. I'd be interested to know why you prefer it over forrest, particularly if wipeout performs better.

Wipe Out is available in England.

Contact Paul Co in the US and find out who the distributor is.

I think he is in Scotland.

500Nitro,

Am I right in thinking you have something to do with importing WipeOut into Oz? Do you sell direct? Or, where can I buy it in Sydney/Goulburn?

Thanks

mike

500Nitro,

Thanks for that - I'll order some. If it's as good as everyone says I may not need the answer to the post I've just made in the doubles section - at leat not the copper cleaning solution. You don't have a great fix for leading too do you?

Thanks again.

If I look into the bores of all my rifles with a Bore Scope (Hawkeye),
I find a bore clean of powder and dirt but with streaks of copper in the rifleing grooves particularly about 2/3 barrel length from the breech end. I reclean with anything from Hoppes #9 to Sweet's 7.62 Solvent to Barnes copper cutter to bore paste to Brownells JB bore cleaning compound. I mean this copper will not clean out. So either my rifles are the exception or the press really does not mean a "clean bore" but rather a "clean enough bore". Any thoughts?

have you tried the "wipe out" product?

I've had the same results with all of the other cleaners you mentioned (and then some.) although i haven't used a scope to check it, there is no visible copper streaking (like there was with the other products.)

I've had the same problem and solved it using the Outers FoulOut battery operated electrolytic bore cleaner, but can't get the Outers cleaning solutions in Oz anymore. Am about to try WipeOut.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Wipe-Out. It's the best I've used, and I haven't had to run a brush through my barrel since using it.

Been using Wipeout for awhile. Have a local gunsmith who does quite a few custom rifles for "names" and wants me to develop loads using either the Barnes X bullets (pre-TSX) or Swifts. Even had Connie Brooks'.300WinMag for a week (Randy's wife, owner of Barnes Bullets). Needless to say, copper fouling with the older X bullets could become quite troublesome. The Wipeout works and saves me work .

Westley_Richards

That's what I found and I have used all of the products you used (in the past).

Hoppes #9 - OK for Powder residue and Lead but not copper
Sweet's 7.62 Solvent to Barnes copper cutter - I hate ammonia and since I have seen what damage these
can do to barrles, I won't use it any more.
JB bore cleaning compound - too abrasive for my liking, especially on old english guns
Although I'm not afraid of hard work, all of the above also mean you have to scrub heaps
- Wipe out you leave and it works itself.

I got onto Wipe Out, checked it out, imported a whole heap and added it to what I
distribute in this country (although due to the cost of shpping Dangerous goods,
I don't think I'll import any more once it's all sold).

Re Electrolytic bore cleaner

A friend of mine used one once (not the same but it used electricity and chemicals
and well, somehow it touched the bore and the elctricity arced, the end result is that he
made a small pit in his barrel.

Anyway, hope tis helps.
