Monster one-tonne croc hauled from Northern Territory waterhole

The moment a monster crocodile weighing nearly a tonne was dragged from Northern Territory wetlands has been captured by a 60 Minutes camera crew.

Reporter Peter Stefanovic travelled to the remote Indigenous community of Peppimenarti – around 320km southwest of Darwin – to meet croc wrangler Matt Wright.

Mr Wright, 34, was summoned by locals to remove a rogue reptile suspected of terrorising the community in recent years, after livestock were taken and a young boy almost snatched.

The former Army reservist and star of National Geograpghic documentary series Outback Wrangler managed to lure the croc into a trap in a waterhole with a rotting pig carcass.

Despite his vast experience, Mr Wright acknowledged the risk involved.

“It can get dangerous if you're not on your game and you don't know what you're doing,” he told Stefanovic.

“They are prehistoric, they know how to kill.

“You just have to stay out of the kill zone.”

After a two-hour standoff, he was eventually able to lasso the animal’s jaw as the sheer size of the beast dawned on locals who gathered to watch the catch.

A 4WD was needed to haul the crocodile from the water, revealing a 4.8m animal with an estimated weight of nearly a tonne.

A towel was placed over the reptile’s eyes and with the help of a bulldozer, the crocodile was transported to a new waterway near Darwin - away from the homes of locals.

Mr Wright’s mother was on hand to watch her son in action for the first time.

“It’s not for everybody,” she said.

“I know he’s not silly when he does this, he puts a lot of thought into it.

“I’m glad I’m a long, long way away – and I don’t have to worry about you.”
