Not a commercial Mauser, Oberndorf, sporter, but a sporterized WW1 military Gewehr 98. No civilian proofmarks, just the German military acceptance "eagle" and the military inspector's personal marks. Military barrel, shown by the 7.90 mm bore diameter mark. The receiver ring has been crudely stippled over, obliterating the year date below "OBERNDORF A/N". The low "535" Serial number, if still complete, means it was the 535th Gew98 made by the factory in the now unknown fiscal year, any of the 20 years from 1898 to 1918. The stock too seems to be the trimmed down military one.
Sir, Thank you for your reply, now to find out if it is in safe firing condition. This was given to me after a relative passed away, but no one knew where he got it, how long he owned it or when the last time it was shot or oiled.
