Rifle Building Questions
      #271752 - 16/10/15 09:55 AM

Hello everyone,

Although what I am asking is not exclusive to double rifles or nitro rifles, I am interested in learning about building rifles. I currently am an apprentice machinist and being the son and grandson of two men that hunted Africa (my dad and grandfather were colonists in Mozambique) double rifles and nitro express rifles are almost synonymous with the type of life that they lead there.

Indeed, if it were not for Portuguese gun laws, I would own several right now.

I don't have the ability financially to buy a double rifle, or a nitro express rifle. But I DO have machine tools- mill, lathe, the whole nine yards.

What would be a good starting point for building my first rifle? I really don't care if it's something simple at first, but one day I would like to enter double rifle land.

What kind of parts can I buy premade? Where can I find the prints to machine the parts off of? Are any components (such as the break on a break action shotgun) cast and then machined to finish them off?

Any input about building a rifle would be great, I am frankly at a loss with this one.

Oh, well in that case....

Where do you buy the parts?!?! Specifically the action. I really like the falling block style breach on the No. 1 by Ruger, but I haven't had much luck finding an intact one.

That is the big one right now. I would like to have a better idea of what I won't have to try to machine.

Giday Weibel and welcome to the forum.

Here are a coupler of actions being offered with the Wesson made Fraser type
http://www.steveearleproducts.com/fraser.html

You may be able to buy an action from Soroka (Gibbs Farquharson) although they are high end and may not suit a first build

Okay, better way to word this:

I'm still in college.
Anything where I wouldn't have to pony up that much cash? I don't care if its break action, bolt action, a slinky, what ever.

As long as its not another infernal AR. Too many guys my age have them- it's almost cliche, military veteran with an AR.

Hi Weibel,

It might be an idea if you have a look at military Mauser 98 actions. They are a good, robust bolt action, and you can decide from a wide range of calibres what you would like to have. But more importantly for you, they're cheap to buy and there's loads of spares about.

Weibel,
Have you considered building a double rifle on a converted double barrel shotgun action? Those are actions that should be available just about anywhere. Send me a personal message if you decide to go this way and I'll give you some pointers. Bob

That sounds salacious and almost like cheating.

I like it!
I'd have to work hard to hide it's past- I wouldn't want to go around real double rifle/nitro people to have it pull a Bill Cosby- and have the past bite me.

How large of a caliber could they handle? How about old lever actions? Old .30-30s aren't too expensive.

Take those pointers from Bob and get this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Building-Double-Ri...g+double+rifles

There are lots of old Greener Crossbolt action shotguns, to be found very cheap, that can be converted to low pressure double rifle cartridges, such as the 450 Express #2. Ellis Browns Book is awesome!
