Hippo kills Australian tourist

By Brendan Roberts
March 02, 2005

A HIPPOPOTAMUS has attacked and killed a Melbourne woman on an adventure holiday in Kenya.

Vicky Elizabeth Bartlett, 50, from Kew, was with a group of 12 tourists, including other Australians, at Lake Naivasha when the hippo attacked, a Kenyan police spokesman said last night.
The Kenyan police spokesman said: "The hippo attacked the woman, flipping her into the air before tossing her on the ground and trampling her."

Mrs Bartlett was rushed to a nearby hospital but died while being treated.

Devastated husband Geoff Bartlett said from their Kew home last night that his wife was an adventurous woman who was touring Kenya for the first time and had been looking forward to the trip.

No one else was injured in the attack.

The incident took place on Monday night at Fisherman's Camp, a popular lakeside camping ground around which signs warn tourists to beware of hippos after dark.

John Mwangi, the group's tour guide, said Mrs Bartlett had seen a hippo on Sunday night and had gone to look again for one without telling him.

The group was en route to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

Officials from the Australian High Commission were in Naivasha, 90km northwest of Nairobi, to investigate the incident.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra said last night the Australian embassy in Nairobi was offering consular help to Mrs Bartlett's family.

A department spokeswoman would not say when Mrs Bartlett's body would be returned to Australia.

In March, 2000, Robert Lourie, from Caulfield, was killed while on his honeymoon after being attacked by a two-tonne hippo in a wildlife reserve in Botswana.

The 33-year-old – married at Albert Park Lake the previous month – was savaged by the hippo, which charged a group of canoes on a two-day excursion at the Okavango reserve in the country's northwest.

The hippo grabbed Mr Lourie by the leg, bit him and then dumped him in the water, according to a spokesman for the company that organised the excursion.

Mr Lourie died of blood loss from the injuries he sustained.

Hippos kill more people every year in Africa than any other wild animal.

They emerge on shore after dark to graze and will attack anything that comes between them and the water, where the animals feel safe.

Company expresses sympathy following hippo victim's death

***

A tour company has expressed its sympathy to the family of a Melbourne woman who was killed by a hippopotamus on one of its tours in Kenya.

Vicky Bartlett's first trip to Kenya went horribly wrong on Monday night during a visit to a popular tourist spot in the Rift Valley.

The 50-year-old Kew woman is thought to have been approaching a waterhole with some other tourists when she was trampled by a hippo.

Some newspapers have reported she had seen a hippo the night before and went to look for one again without telling her guide.

Her husband Geoff Bartlett says he finds it hard to believe she would have wandered off.

The Sydney-based tour company which organised her trip, Kamuka Travel, has expressed its sympathy to her family. A spokesman says a police investigation is now under way.

Meanwhile, Australian diplomatic staff say it will be days before Kenyan police finish their investigation into Ms Barlett's death.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Bruce Billson, says consular staff have been assisting the family.

But Mr Billson says it is unclear whether she was alone, or with others, shortly before her death.

"In the evening we believe some of the tour group did head towards the lake area. And other than that the details are a little bit contradictory and sketchy and we are waiting for a complete report from the local authorities," he said.

The brother of a Melbourne woman killed by a hippopotamus at a lakeside resort in Kenya will travel to Africa to retrieve his sister's body.

No idea.

I've actually stayed in that camp, almost twenty years ago.

Across the water on Lake Naivasha is a lovely island with numerous waterbuck, giraffe and other antelope, where one can walk among the animals. They are quite unafraid. Lovely fish eagles too.

Some of these tourists are real fools. In Ambroselli I remember a whole bunch of tourists rushed towards a herd of elephant which fed into a camp ground to excitedly take photographs. The staff ran after them yelling warnings that the elephants were dangerous but most of the mazungas ignored them. Of course it is possible just to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. If stumbling around in the dark it is possible to bump into a hippo. Camped once on the Zambezi in Zambia hippo were feeding right outside the tent.

It is a fact that most tourists to Africa does not understand how dangerous some of the animals are. Unfortuneately most of them does'nt even bother to do some reseach before they visit a wilderness site.

This is where the importance of a guide comes in, it is the guides job to inform inform and inform. Most people do not hear the first time. It is also the guides job to check his clients all the time and make sure they do not wonder off. You cannot afford not to have a watchfull eye on your clients all the time. The clients do not understand the dangers of Africa and the guide are responsible for them, that is what he was trained for.

Undoubtedly the hippo could tell that the woman was a liberal. Enraged with the socialist tendencies of western society, the hippo expressed himself the only way he knew how.

She had probably just seen the re-release of Bambi and wanted to ask the cute hippo its name. The hippo answered "Thump-her"...used body language...

But the dancing hippo in Fantasia were so cute, how could she help but want to go pet one?

At the hippo aquarium at the San Diego Zoo there is a motorized hippo skull in the display case next to the window showing how the teeth grind together to keep the lower canines knife sharp. Those who take the time to look go away sobered and seriously impressed. All they need to know more than that is how fast those round blubbery-looking things can move!

Always sad to hear things like this.
Africa and its animals are very often underestimated by tourists. Each and every animal here is potentially dangerous. We have heard many storys about man eating lion and leopard but the hippo is number one on the list when it comes to kills by a mammal. The mosquito is of course the no 1 killer of all and the bushbuck is the antelope that killed the most humans.

A hippo's jaws is also the set that can open the widest of all animals and is an unbelievable 150 degrees so the chances of a hippo biting you miss is very very slim and by this you can also see why some humans are bitten in half.
A hippo also has the the biggest teeth of all animals and the world record is something like 30 odd inches. If anybody has RW record listing with them they can perhaps correct me with the exact length. They are extremely dangerous if stumbled on or in close encounters. They are actually faster under water than on dry land.On land they run about 45km/h and underwater they go up to 50km/h (i dont know who was taking time under water but that is what the experts say.)They often graze up to 10km away from the waterhole and this is mainly at night.During daytime they'll always be in the water or just on the edges.
Just a littlebit of info for the interested. Please correct me if I made any mistakes. This was written quickly of the top of my head.

Oh look at that honey 2 1/2tons of cuteness! 40km/per hour no way you must be joking ! (No disrespect intented)

That is why the hippo is the number one killer of people excluding malaria in Africa among animals. But I still love him but also respect him.
