Latest BSA Lee Speed - 8mm No2
      #271215 - 02/10/15 09:41 AM

Hi Gents,

As promised here are some photos (see link below) of my latest B.S.A. Lee Speed. It's a No2 in 8mm and is in lovely condition. The only issue is that it's missing the original magazine, I have some feelers out, so fingers crossed at some point I can find an example.

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Gents,

As I've just worked out how to load up photos I thought I would drop one up here.

Just a note - the magazine is incorrect but threw one in for photo purposes.

Cheers, Roy.

That's another nice rifle Roy, I assume that you would have to hand load for it or is 8x50R ammunition available in the U.S.??

Cheers

PS, well done with the photo uploading! Once I worked it out I was surprised how easy it actually was!

Hi Bidgee,

Thank you for that. Yes happy I can now upload pics. I even found a site that I didn't have to register with, thank goodness - I have enough passwords to remember!

I'm sure hand loading would be the way to go, however that is one skill I have never gotten into. My (longterm) plan is to track down some correct ammo, as it would be nice to shoot it at least once. I'm not in a hurry though as I have plenty of projects to keep me busy for now.

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Gents,

Just a very small update to this older thread.

I'm very pleased to say that I have now found some correct 8x50R ammo (circa 1935). Not sure when I will be getting to the range, but now pleased I can at least see how this old girl shoots.

As mentioned this rifle came 'without' the original 8mm magazine, however just for interest I tried one of my standard .303 examples and I was pleasantly surprised that four ( 4 ) round fitted and cycled through the action with no issue. Needless to say I will try this out on the range and report back - both on how the rifle performs and also on if the .303 magazine actually functions with the 8mm ammo.

A photograph attached for interest.

Cheerio,

Roy

Well done Roy, always fun to get the correct ammo rather than something reformed from other brass, IMO. If the 8x50R is not too different from the 303 dimensionally than you probably wont have to much drama feeding the rounds. A lot of the staggered magazines used in rifles can be reasonably forgiving in that respect, compared to say a Mannlicher Schoenauer.

Good pick up on the ammo. Please do report back on how the rifle performs.

Hi Gents,

Thank for your comments. I originally purchased this just because it was such a lovely rifle with no real expectation of shooting it. That said - and although I confess I'm more of a collector than shooter - I do like to shoot every gun I have if at all possible, so very much looking forward to hearing this rifle come to life again.

Cheerio,

Roy

Great to see, I have 2 rifles in this cailber, 1 Speeder & a Mannlicher 88 English sporter .

I think the 8mm mags were squared off like the .375 Ex, I got one for my .375 but now think it is a 8mm
Still very usable for me how ever !

Hi Sarg,

You project to make parts sounds interesting. I forgot to mention but if you need any specific high res photos, just drop me an email as I'm happy to share. I'm sure you don't as you seem to have far too many Lee-Speeds as it is.....:) but just wanted to put out the offer.

Cheerio,

Roy
