Mauser model 66 in 6,5x68 Schüler
      #270001 - 05/09/15 04:46 AM

I have done something nasty....not really suppose to..

I bought this Mauser 66 designed by Walter Gehmann.

I have for many years handled them, never fired them but been on/of about them but now time has matured. Along with my KleinKaliber Mauser büchse this rifle will be send to me. I guess once a Mauser man..

http://www.collector-firearms.de/jagdwaffen/107-repetierbuchse-mehrlader-mauser-66-kal-65-x-68.html

I have wrote to these guys here to hear what a 9,5x66 Vom Hofe SE spare barrel could cost.
http://www.keidler-waffen.de/mauser-66/
With a casevolume only a slight less of a .378Wea the 9,5x66 can shoot a 260grain bullet at 3110 ft/sec.

In this combo we have the names of Walter Gehmann, August Schüler, Mauser und Herr Vom Hofe und so weiter und so weiter.

aber inzwischen...

IMO very nice rifle. My friend just bought one in .30-06. When handling the rifle I just noticed it's very short and compact rifle so it would be quite an interesting experience to shoot such big caliber ammo as 9,5x66 with it...

By the way; 70 years ago this lied would have been quite well-known song in my home in northern lapland....

RigbyMauser
Congratulations on your choice. Mauser 66 are rifles of the utmost quality and of extreme accuracy, which slowly start becoming classic rifles, even if not yet as classic as their pre-WW2 Oberndorf siblings. I have been the happy owner of two of them since the mid-70's, one Europa model in 7x64 (proofed 1972) and one S model in 8x68S (proofed 1976)and never experienced any issue, both on the range and in the field. The only things I had replaced were the rose wood / white insert on fore end and pistol grip cap, as well as the white insert in the butt stock; I thought this looked 'too Californian'(such as Weatherby rifles in the mid-70's) for German rifles bearing the Mauser name and I had them replaced by more classical ebony work. You can determine your rifle's proofing year from its serial number and I can tell you how to do that if you wish.
Regards.

Thanks Louis..(and others)

The Mauser 66 has somewhat been un-appreciated except by those who had them. I must confess I too have never really liked them or more should I say ignored them. Oh well I guess one has a stand until he takes another...Atleast I did. Sometimes with more knowledge of something the interest grows.

Another guy who does sparebarrels for the Mauser 66
http://www.otto-repa.de/leistungen/wechsllaeufe.html

Looks VERY good..

It looks like I will pay this guy a visit. The shop is located in Oberndorf(Ganz natürlich) and getting a sparebarrel for a Mauser it couldn´t be more correct.

The Mauser 66 once featured in one Aussie gun writers writings, Nick Harvey, with 8x68S and 6.5x68 barrels.

I had some interest in acquiring one, but price and money at the time prevented that for me.

Also they do tend to be quite heavy rifles.

BUT I did develop and more than strong interest in the two cartridges/chamberings listed - 6.5x68 and 8x68S. I do now have a Mauser M03 in 8x68S and unfortunately, 6.5x65RWS not the Schuler ... still urks me all the time.

Not wanting to go off topic, but if anyone knows if anyone other than Mauser makes barrels for the Mauser M03, I would love to know!

Useful cartridge to add to your 6.5x68.

Hi JOhn.

I will check in on who does M03 spare barrels besides Mauser. I am sure there is a few who can do it...and do it on regular basis.

The Mauser 66 was an expensive rifle to produce and still remain a good platform for just about any caliber up to COL 3,75" long. They have been made in .416Rigby, .378WEa etc. It still has a following crowd and that's why we see german gunmakers has found a small special niche production to make sparebarrels. At some point it was a rifle ahead of it´s time.

The Mauser M03 is a rifle that is still being produced alone mit-habengut-und-alles.(everything)
Any good gunsmith ought to be able to make a spare barrel for the Mauser M03 from a raw rifled tube.

I think I had considered that previously and people on NE itself advised it would be difficult or impossible?

At the prioce M03 barrels sell for, a custom one shouldn't even be much more expensive done outside the factory.

Congratulations, Jens! Love the 66s, and the fact that they rarely come on sale, suggests that their owners love them even more!

Good hunting, my friend!
