A safari is a journey + an exciting buffalo hunt
      #269828 - 31/08/15 08:16 PM

"A Safari is not a destination, it is a journey through life ..." & "An exciting buffalo hunt"

As most here know, I turned fifty at the beginning of August and decided some sort of hunt this year was definitely in order. And NE's good friend "larcher" aka as "JB" was invited to come out and hunt as well.

JB and I were generously helped to access to a property in the Top End by a one or two of our Top End NE members, and so the story begins.

But here first is a few teaser photos and captions.

I was going to photoshop this image but my s/w is on the blink, on another PC, so it is unmodified for now. It should read

"WARNING!

A long and not winding road!

Next turn 886 kilometres ... and this was several hours into the second days drive already.

Just as well you had the landcruiser so full of gear you had to tie the head to the spare wheel!

A good story is a story well told. I await with anticipation for a rollicking tale filled with high adventure and heroic deeds.

Where else would one put it???

Shot two days before leaving, and the day before getting it out of the bush.

Tried tying Larchers on the bullbar but much better on the rear tyre.

And in any case, why on Earth would anyone put it INSIDE the Landcruiser? Talk about petty nitpicking ...

I'm not worried if people know I am a hunter, and with most of the accessible meat cut off it didn't smell too ripe. I don't hide like some might that I am a hunter and a trophy hunter, and instead of hiding from a "Cecil" type reaction, welcome the chances for a positive exposure for our sport.

I have been working on the photos. Lots from the whole trip to work through, with mini stories in addition to the hunt covering the drive up and back as well. Need to work them all out before I start so some patience is required.

This one came close at times during a few spaces of seconds.

No nitpicking, just my failed attempt at a bit of humour, sorry.

Sorry misunderstood.

I was actually concerned about bringing my head back home. Claydog thankfully took JB's and was going to boil it out, cut it for him and send it off with other trophies clients had taken elsewhere.

Mine was shot after this. The jaws removed and as much meat removed as possible.

Left in the bush near the gate as my last night was in Katherine. No time or equipment to boil out. Returned the next morning and warpped with garbage bags and duct tape. Then strapped on the back.

The very hot air and lots of wind probably helped a lot. And it never got too ripe in the four days drive home. Still not too bad as just sitting in the back yard at the moment.

Had contingency plans to stash it in the bush if needed if staying in a motel, but never needed. Had a chat to a couple of guys who stayed at the Underground Motel who parked behind me. They didn't have a problem and were obviously hunters at some time as they asked about boiling out.

Got home and the car wouldn't start the next day so ended up driving the Landcruiser into town as is, guns removed from inside and a bag or two, but otherwise the same. Feels a bit different from driving around the bush, when driving locally but why not? More should do it, as it is good advertising.

Actually looking at the Toyota emblem it looks like a stylised water buffalo skull and horns. So one day might permanently mount one on the bull bar.

Getting there. Worked through and posted to a "development" thread almost all the non hunting photos of the trip. Started on these as they are easier to do with less stpry required.

Will be working on the last trip photos and then the hunting photos and stories tonight.

Here's a couple of previews.

The OLD Stuart Highway. I drove this road in April 1984 and it was closed in May 1984.

Central Australian scene.

Ha ha, the new highway was completed while we were away.

The old road was a real adventure with a real risk of not making it. Lots of cars smashed up on the side of the road, some old and some newer. Risk of smacking into cattle, camels, horses and donkeys. More so that today. Big holes full of super fine bulldust, which not only filled your car with fine blinding dust but also did not allow the car to steer, so you went straight ahead irrespective of the bend in the road. The cattle grids were raised well above the road surface by erosion, and gave a hell of a jar if you didn't slow down enough. Not dangerous unless one lost control, but tjhe corrugations in the road made an irritating journey of constant vibration.

It took us 24 hours driving to get to the border, driving non stop, sharing the wheel between three of us. Funnily we met two dickheads in Alice Springs from our home area, who also drove up but in their V8 car and sped all the way ... didn't make it, and crashed in the bush ... car written off. F***heads ....

The old road was much more fun than the highway today, but not a good communication route.
