Did FN ever produce a commercial action with a thumb slot in the left receiver wall?

Same with the Model 94's (or 96's) actions used by Husqvarna in commercial Mausers - having thumb-cuts were model 46's. The ones without the thumb cuts were model 146's instead, if I understand those models correctly. The M246's also had thumb cuts I think, but were Obernorf M98's (weren't they? - not FN actions.

The reason I asked, I have a Mauser actioned rifle with a German made semi-octagonal barrel in caliber 6.5X57. The rifle is fitted with a G&H side mount, so the markings (if any) on the left receiver wall are covered up. The action has an FN type low scope safety, an FN type floor plate release and a bolt handle suitable for low scope mounting (although it does not look exactly like any other FN commercial bolt handle I have seen). No proof marks that I could find. The receiver ring and bridge are not tapped for scope mounts.

The bolt closes with difficulty on a RWS 6.5X57 factory cartridge, but with less difficulty on my hand loads, leading me to believe that the barrel was fitted to the receiver without the benefit of a chanmbering reamer to get the headspace exactly right. It seems to be a very nice outfit, if a bit enigmatic. I will try to post photos later.

FN commercial actions with thumb cuts are mainly pre-WW2 ones, I think. Post WW2, FN gradually introduced the following changes:
- From 1946: Bolt handle redesign
- From 1948: Low scope safety, chrome vanadium steel barrels, solid wall (no thumb cut)
- From early 50’s: Receivers tapped for scope mounts, FN logo progressively removed
- FN Herstal magnum action (incl. 375H&H) from 1953 (FN Browning from 1960 only)
- From mid-fifties: New action bolt (Winchester 70’s style) and side safety
All changes did not occur overnight and models with thumb cuts may have been used later than 1948 in order to make best use of existing factory stocks.

I personally own a FN rifle in calibre 375 H&H that can be precisely dated to 1957, thanks to the Belgian proof marks. If I refer to the above list, my rifle has the new bolt handle design, the modified safety, the solid wall (no thumb cut)and the drilled receiver. However, although being dated 1957, it still has the FN logo, the M98 action bolt and no side safety. xausa - that is a really nice rifle - always wanted a 6.5x57.

I like tight headspace for the first round. After firing they should be an easy fit, unless the diameter at the head is undersized in the chamber, but even that should iron itself out somewhat with firing - or the chamber's neck diameter with bullet seated is too tight. Excessive or readable high pressures should be obvious with a neck diameter problem.

FN made Mauser 98 actions with the thumb cut and the loading clip slots in the rear bridge and C collar. It had the long front trigger guard tang as the military Mausers had with the lock screw on the outside. This action was called the "Peerless" and was manufactured from the mid 1920,to around 1940. This action has a bent down bolt handle not designed for scope use. Actions were available to the public and Husqvarna purchased these actions and polished the "Fab National Armes de Guerre" off the left receiver wall to make their early Hi-Power rifles.( I can barely make out the words on my 1940, 146). The model 146 uses this action and is available only in 9.3x57. The 246 was made in very limited numbers (about 237) and were chambered only in 9.3x62.It also uses this action. If the stock is removed all the Belgian proof marks can be seen on the left front receiver ring.In 1947 FN started transitioning by adding a swept back bolt handle, shorter front tang with lock screw on inside ," 1947 model", then removing the thumb cut and changing to the H collar and by 1950 removed the hump and clip slots in the rear bridge and drilled and tapped for scope and peep sight, contoured the trigger guard, added an extended floor-plate release and omitted the lock scews. to produce the "Deluxe action". This was used by Roy Weatherby to make the first Weatherby magnums.Actions were also bought by JC HIggins, Colt and others because of their relatively low cost due to the European economic woes of the time. In 1959 FN came out with the "Supreme" action with streamlined bolt shroud and hinged floor plate, three position side safety and improved trigger.
