Suitable Action for Double Rifle
      #267816 - 12/07/15 10:01 AM

I have a chance to purchase a Parker 12 gauge double. It was made in 1898 according to the Parker collectors website. It is marked Vulcan Steel on the rib, so it is not a damascus barreled gun. The bores are rough and the stock has been replaced, so it has little collector value. It still locks up very tight. Would this be suitable for conversion to a double rifle? If so, what calibers would it handle? I was thinking maybe 30-30, 38-55, .405 or 45-70.
Thank you, Mark Poley

I would think it certainly would handle the .45/70 - as you make the pressure for THAT ctg.what you want it to be - for whatever action you use. The .45/70 was great for NA game with BP loads, and with smokeless is better yet. There is available a LOT of loading data with loads from the teens, say up to 19,000CUP as well as data from there to all the way up to 50,000CUP.

Firing pin size will have to be addressed if this action is to be suitable for higher pressure loads than about 28,000psi. the large pins of shotgun will handle pressures up to about that high, in my experience with my Sharps with the huge Black Powder firing pin - pretty much identical to shotgun pins.

In the .45/70 case in the lower ranges, say below about 34,000CUP, CUP and PSI are identical numbers. when pressures get up around 40,000 or higher, I believe I've seen it noted that there starts a spread in the #'s, thus 43,000CUP, as max in a Marlin lever-gun, is not 43,000PSI, but actually higher than 43,000PSI.

Hello Mark.

Lower pressure is good.
The one issue that I can see is that with a 12ga frame it is going to weigh a ton. You could go to 50-70 to cut the weight down a bit and avoid the possibility of a future owner slipping a high pressure 45-70 into it as well.

Mark,
You never said how much this was going to cost you, but if it is in the $300.00 and up range, I would say you would be better off buying a European gun with a third fastener on it. As an added benefit many European 12 gauge guns are lighter in weight than most older American guns. I feel that any decent gun with a third fastener like the Greener crossbolt, or a hidden fastener like the sliding Purdy bolt, is going to be better suited for your conversion, no matter what the caliber is going to be. Good luck on your conversion. Bob

Any shotgun with a single bite really isn't a good candidate for a double rifle.

Thank you for all the replies. It is valued in the $350.00-$400.00 range. I will probably pass on this one.
Thanks again, Mark
