Water Buffalo charging a train in the NT - 1970's
      #26748 - 24/02/05 12:13 PM

On another forum this topic came up. I remember reading about it, probably an account re-published. Google failed to find anything.

Can anyone shed more light on the subject, preferably links to any sites discussing it.

Thanks.

I can't answer the bit on the water buff vs. train in NT, but it sounds like something cattle and buffalo would do...

About 25 years ago my uncle sold a couple of brangus bulls to a cattle rancher here in Texas...an unfenced rail line crossed the property of that ranch and a couple of times per day a train passed through. One of the brangus bulls in the pasture (paddock) got tired of the train trying to horn in on his harem and so one morning that bull was waiting on the tracks at the appointed time for his duel with the train...when he saw the train in the distance, he waited...it got closer, then he charged head on. The bull lost this match, as you might expect.

Richard.

Also forgot to mention, the CASA has a publication on flying in the Outback, I forgot exactly which of their publications on flying in the Outback it is (because they seem to have a million such publications), but it includes a short account of a couple of water buffalo charging a helicopter on the ground.

Also when in NT a few years ago I heard a word of mouth account of a water buffalo charging a plane on the takeoff roll at an airfield.

Richard.

I've heard stories of bull moose in rut charging trains but I've also heard that quite a few moose get hit in the winter because the line doesn't have much snow so it is easier to travel. The train comes along and the moose have a hard time getting up the snow bank.

I've had this story of a buff charging a train confirmed but still looking for a printed source. If anyone has something in hard copy that would be great too. A photocopy would be fine. Thanks in advance.
