First time Fishing NA!
      #267292 - 02/07/15 12:09 PM

Hey guys,

Went fishing for the first time (on my third visit) to the US of A!

Just local around Enid, Oklahoma with the missus. All fish were a blast to catch! No monsters, but i was happy with every single one of them.

Can anyone assist with ID's please? I think i have the turtles and snake right.

Rod was a Pen "Goliath" Fishing Rod (Pen, not Penn) with whatever real they come with, and 4lb line. Used a mix of worms and chicken liver as bait, and caught a few on "Bitsy Minnows" at Meadowlake (the lures).

I must say, after using these little rods my normal one back home feels huge!

First up was the Waterworks Pond. We only got panfish here, and a couple turtles (Skye caught the scary Snapping Turtle haha, then i had to deal with it!).

So Common Snapping Turtle, Red Eared Slider, and a Grahams Crayfish Snake?
We also saw another species of watersnake, and a Water Moccasin.

Then we went to MeadowLake, and i used the lures to start. Caught my first and only bass of the trip. I was fishing the little stream that flows into it, was about a foot deep.

First up, i'm pretty sure this is a little Largemouth Bass?

This little gutsy fellow was also caught on the lure! As were the 3 above. the last fish pictured was on liver right before i left (and also the only cast i used bait on).

Then we went to Roman Nose Lake. Caught a few panfish, the biggest being 7 1/2". Pretty fish, whatever they are.

Final place was Canton Lake. Put on a bit of chicken liver under a bobber and cast out. Within 10 seconds it went under and Skye hooked up. She didnt want to fight what felt much bigger than what we had being catching, so handed it to me and i finished it off for her. Team effort The pic is where we caught it, was right on the edge of the murky water.

I think its a Channel Catfish? Was 24" long, gave the little rods and 4lb a good work out. Hook pulled RIGHT at the bank, but luckily managed to grab and land it!

All in all it was a great trip. I think next time i go back will get a permit to chase Paddlefish (with heavier gear!) and take the Pens back for Gar.

Cheers guys,
Ash.

Ha! It most certainly was not fun trying to unhook that angry Snapper
Skye got a laugh from it though!

Here's some minnows we caught (and let go, they were in a tiny pond of water drying up and we moved them to a more permanent pool).

ID's on these also? I think the first 2 are a male and female Fathead minnow.
The 3rd pic i'd love to know what this is. Was pretty and we got 2 of them.
4th pic, that fish would not sit still! These were the most common thing stuck in the puddle.

Glad to hear you caught a few Ash....far better than I've faired of late!
Certainly not the biggest you've caught, but its the fun of the chase that makes all the difference.
Hope you have a good time catching up with the Missus
Looking forward to your next catch
Cheers

The little panfish are sunfish and the bigger dark ones could be crappies. The fish with the turquoise markings we always called sunnies anyway. They often have a yellow/orange belly. Crappies can actually get to a decent size and are good to eat and the sunfish are really tasty fileted out and fried but it takes a lot of them for a decent meal.
The way to tell between a smallmouth and a largemouth bass is that when the mouth is closed, the back corner of the mouth on a largemouth extends back past a vertical line drawn through the eye.

Glad you enjoyed yourself Ash.

Those fish are quite normal in size for the Continental USA.
They use smoke and mirrors when filming the bass fishing shows to make the fish look bigger.

Come on up here and we'll show you some real fish.

Thanks, guys.

Daryl - I'd love to come up some time, mate.

Hopefully moving to Oklahoma next year. We'll work something out, hey?

Promise - we're planning a trip around the States coming in a year or two. Already promised to visit Virginia. They sure make good maple syrup - just as good, maybe better than Quebec, but of course, merely on par with Ontario.
