New member seeking 577 infomation

Hello to all. I am new to this forum so I guess I should introduce my self before I start asking questions. My name is Wayne and I live in Lagrange Ga. USA. I am a gun collector and shooter. I own several British single shots and a couple of double rifles and like most of you probable have more guns than I can use. I won't go as fare as saying that I am not an addict. Now for my first question. I am getting ready to build a 577 double rifle and I have been unable to find any twist rates for the Bpe guns. So any one with info on bullet lenths and weights along with twist rates and rifling depth would be of help. This is my first time on the forum so I will see if I can figure out how to work the search function. Thanks in advance for any help.

.577 BPE will normally shoot 500 to 650gr. bullets. With such, a slow twist will work fine- I'd think something from a 36" to 48" should suffice. Even slower will work as my .58 Hawken (66" twist) shot 675gr. RN bullets into 2" at 100 meters with 165gr. 2F.

I shortened the plunger of the Lyman #57730 mould creating a short hollow base with a very thick skirt, increasing the weight by just over 100gr. This mould is probably undersize for a BPE - but of course, much depends on the groove diameter of the available barrels.

I am getting ready to order the barrels. The maker is ordering a new finished reamer in .577 and they will be rifled to .585. Don't really want to use a mini ball mold. They do not hold enough grease. NEI makes a nice mold that cast 610 grains. Have you had any experience with them.

At .585" groove depth, you'll need a dedicated mould of course.

As far as holding enough grease - if using REAL BP lube (BP Gold or SPG) as I did, the lubrication I applied was sufficient for repeated shots and group shooting with no loss of accuracy. Whenever shooting a smokepole (or BP ctg. gun), I loath having to wipe the bore until I am finished shooting the group or with patched round ball, shooting for the day.

Only the outside grease grooves were lubed. Good PROPER lube makes a difference and is fully capable of holding accuracy for a 5 shot group + a fouler if need be.

I'm sure you'll get it sorted out.

I will actually be shooting a nitro for black load in the gun. That is once I fire it with black to get a velocity reading for the gun. I already have a good lube. I make it from a mixture of bees wax Vaseline and peanut oil. Works great guns clean easy and dos'nt seem to matter weather its smokeless or black powder. I am thinking about a 1-44 twist and a 625 to 650 bullet.

Wayne,
Contact Pac-Nor barrels and tell them what you want, they are very good to work with. Bob
