Lord Derby Eland?
      #265814 - 02/06/15 09:42 AM

I'm looking to do a Lord Derby Eland trip in 2017.

Anyone hunt with Mayo Oldiri Safari in Cameroon? I would hunt with Guav Johnson.

Mayo Oldiri is a spanish outfitter having the largest areas in Cameroon, either in South (forest) than in North (savannah.

They are doing pretty good.

Mayo Oldiri is in stark contrast with other outfitters. The rest are "family" outfits, the outfitter being the PH, and theses guys having their area often for 2 generations (Vannier, Guerini, Betaille....).

Regards to the PH. 3 French senior PHs with all the possible credentials. One of them is Hervé whom I hunted with in CAR twice. 2 others are spaniards and not registered in the ACP, the PH french association.
Your PH is mentionned as "sennior" and is a Zimbabwean PH.
None the less, hunting the Derby eland is no big deal as far as You can walk. A premium is the density of roads and trails to point the best tracks and stalk the eland.
Good luck.

Thank you Larcher. My French is pretty decent care of school system in Quebec and I was told this might be a help.

Peter Flack recommended this firm and PH to me and after checking references I just bit the bullet so to speak. Booked for 2016 Lord Derby/Harnesed Bushbuck and 2017 Bongo/Sitatunga.

I have a good frind just out of the Canadian Special forces who is comming as an observer, maybe if no one is looking he might accidentally catch my rifle as it's falling and the negligent discharge might take a Roan and/or waterbuck.

Now the question is can I ever afford Etheopia?

PS I plan on bringing my SxS 9.3x74r for both hunts.

Rell

You've an edge with speaking French, maybe You'll be more in touch with the blacks than your Zim PH and more aware of what is going on when tracking.
Having a rifle incidentally shooting game is not a good idea, you better have to bargain it. Roan or waterbucks, common games, aren't pricey.
Derby eland is a sissy, unlike the Cape eland, any wound is stopping him, he has no fight spirit.
A 9.3x74 double rifle will do the trick.
Ethiopia is another story, an expensive hunting country if You're looking for a Mtn Nyala.

good luck

Good luck. Sounds like it will be an enjoyable hunt. And with good company.

Interesting comment about the difference ie toughness to being shot, between Southern Livingstone's Eland and Lord Darby Eland by larcher.

Thanks for the words about Guav, it's always nice to get an endorsement of the PH you are going to use.

I thought all Eland where a little soft for there size, well hit and they are a pushover, but poorly hit and they light a chuck for Texas.

Larcher have you taken a Lord derby eland and if so what with?

Shot placement is very critical with Eland. If you only hit one lung then expect possible days of follow up .
I like 9.3mm and 375 class calibre's for Eland and although the 404 and 416 calibre's are very good for Eland they can be quite heavy rifles which is a consideration for the long hot tracking hunts often apart of chasing Eland .

I am very pleased that ozhunter recommand this PH, now You're on secure tracks.
Regards to DERBY eland : The South African is tough and bullet placement is paramount. ABSOLUTELY NOT SO with the Derby. I shot one at 120m too far back in the paunch because of to much foliage impeding the shot. The eland flew slowly trotting, which allowed me to punch it twice again in the paunch and my PH (Herve Houdebine, PH of Mayo Oldiri too) finished him a couple of seconds later with a solid in the neck. At this camp I also saw 2 other elands, ill shot (paunch and leg), that were collected without any trouble. Our PHs in CAR (Houdebine and Oumar) were 100% affirmative that a Derby eland when hit is finished. That's the only game in their opinion that can be ALWAYS retrieved and easily at that. Conclusion, the rifle and calibre options are numerous. The 9.3 is OK. Don't forget that one rarely shoot beyond 100m in the bush.
