Double rifle angst!
      #264632 - 07/05/15 12:16 AM

I'm booked to Mozambique this September for Buff, Sable, Eland and Chobe Bushbuck(2).

My Chapuis 450-400 is acting up. It "lost it's regulation a year ago and was re regulated. All with the same lot of Hornady DGX. It has seemed to have lost it's regulation again. JJ at Champlin is great to work with and he's standing behind his guaranty and he thinks it may be ammo related, the Hornady loads are not supper consistent and he's found them to be a touch hot.

The recommendation is to try Woodleigh .410 400gr and RL15 at 66-67 grains. If the barrels group consistently he will re regulate to the new Hand load. Make a sense to me.

If I can't get the rifle up to,snuff in time .... Am I ok with a 9.3x74r SxS and a 375H&H bolt gun?

A .375 H&H will be fine. Getting softs and solids to hit the same point of impact can be tricky. Some of the ammo manufacturers are pretty good at this. It pays to buy a few different brands and do some serious range work. A 9.3x74 is not a Cape buffalo round if things get dicey.

If you load your own, Reloder 15 is a good powder for the .375 H&H when solids and softs must work together.

Not wishing to teach Grannie how to suck eggs, but RL15 might be just a touch quick as a choice of powder.

A little play on QL, without any burn adjustment, throw up the following data... and lists max. pressure at 40611 psi.

RL15 x 67g/2175mv/41654psi 81% fill
RL17 x 71.5g/2202mv/40414psi 83% fill
RL19 x 78g/2192mv/40033psi 95% fill
RL 22 x 82.6g/2238mv/40069psi 99% fill
RL25 x 82g/2149mv/34502psi 100% fill

N560 x 73g/2184mv/37940psi 86% fill

RL22 looking the most promising.

Hornady gets 2400 fps with a 66.8 grain charge of Reloder 15 and a 300 grain bullet. They max out at 70.1 grains with their popular 300 grain bullets. If you are shooting solid bullets, you do not want more than 2400 fps for several reasons: Over penetration, shooting through several buffalo with the same shot. No doubt wounding one or two, creating a very dangerous situation. Many solids of conventional design rivet, and thus fail, at much over 2400 fps. It is exceedingly difficult to get solids and softs to hit the same point of impact at velocities over a modest speed for a .375 H&H. My own .375 H&H's respond well to the Reloder 15 loads when I am using solids and softs. One of the various 4350's would be appropriate if you were going to drive 300 grain softs of premium construction at maximum velocities. Winchester 760, Hodgdon 414, and Accurate 2700 ball powders(they are the same powder made in the same plant) are also favoured for throwing 300 grain slugs very fast and accurately.

I have never seen Reloder 22 used in a .375 H&H, let alone Reloder 25 or the VihtaVuori N560.

Sorry to hear about your rifle problems, but how does a rifle "lose" regulation unless something is loose?

Traveling with two rifles is a great idea. I assume the double is open sights and the .375 is scoped.

What does your outfitter have to say?

Will you be hunting in bushveld or in the coastal grassy plains?

.375H&H maximum working pressures - in, I assume, a bolt gun, are listed as 62,000PSI SAAMI (US) and 60,000PSI CIP in Europe.

Rigby270 - I am wondering as to why are your pressure numbers so low, or is that what QL does - undermine a ctg.'s potential by 20,000PSI?

http://kwk.us/pressures.html

As noted, the medium powders, such as H4895 and Reloader #15 are much better suited, more accurate and more stable, when loading at slightly reduced levels, as in the 2,400fps range.

The 9.3x74r I scoped in a QR set up. Shooting 285 Norma Orynx factory ammo.

Then 375H&H is a Granite Mountain Arms actioned rifle for Wayne at AHR. I am torn between 300gr Barnes TTSX and Woodleigh Weldcore Soft and Solids.

I have a couple of 5lbs jugs of RL15 so pretty happy about that.

JJ has a used Dakota in 416 Rigby that seems reasonable. If the Chapuis can't get it's act together maybe I'll pick that up.

I would prefer a double 9.3 over the bolt 375. That almost instant second shot from a balanced double is a great bonus.
Also a fantastic rifle for the other game on your list

Daryl,

I might have gone cross eyed, but I was referring to .410 x 400g in 450/400. Not 375 H & H...

So I tried .410 Woodleigh Softs with 66gr of RL 15, knock #2 wads, and Fed GM Mag primers. The right barrel shoots 4 shots at 50m into 1.5 inches and the left barrel does even better. But they cross by about 8 inches at the 50m targets.

JJ is going to try and re regulate with that load ....

Got the rifle back from JJ last week. He regulated it with 400gr Woodleigh soft points and 66gr RL 15. At 50m it shoot 6 rounds into 1.25 inches. At 100m it put 4 shots in under 2 inches. I'm a little apprehensive about it loosing regulation again but it's shooting sweet right now.

I have 400gr Woodleigh solids to load. I'm thinking of loading 6@65gr , 6@65.5gr and 6@66gr of RL15. Does this make sense? I think I read once that with solids you just drop it 1 gr?
