Nitro for black shooting too high
      #26435 - 17/02/05 05:19 AM

.500-3" BPE, Have found the load, 3 out of 4 R&L's will be touching but they will be 3 1/2" high at 50 yds. This with the tiny front bead at the very bottom of the rear "V".
At 100, two shots were 1 1/2" apart but 10" high - the bead was covering the bull completly so that may not be accurate.
Shooting parallel in all cases ie: not crossing.
Load is 53 gr. IMR 4198
2 foam wads
Montana Precision Swaging 365 gr. .512 lead bullet/SPG lube
Looks like the only cure is a higher front sight. Original has a stake on the sight, do I just use a brass punch on it or is there a better way? Thanks, Dave

davem3:
Before doing that, might I suggest you try a heavier bullet. That 365-grainer is on the light side even for black-powder loads, the mainstay of the .500 Express was a 380-grain bullet. Nitro-for-Black loads generally require a heavier bullet to shoot to the sights. The 'correct' weight for that cartridge would be 440-grains.

There's a better-than-even chance that a heavier bullet alone will solve the problem, but you may need to adjust the load slightly to regulate.

Graeme Wright's recommended load for the .500 Nitro for Black cartridge is 72-grains Varget beneath a 440-grain bullet, with a polyurathane-foam wad to take up the space.
He's usually 'wright' on the money!

Marrakai
I have tried the 440 gr. bullet and have not found any combination that shoots as good as the 365.
It seems like I have found a reduced load that regulates and considering the age of the gun (and the owner), I would like to adjust the front sight to the load.
I have the equiptment, I just need to get the sight out, take a few measurements and mill one out .044 higher.
I just put a picture of the muzzle on "It's whats up front that counts" thread.
Thanks for the help, Dave
