Baikal 30-06; Converted to 30-30 Win
      #264260 - 27/04/15 11:18 AM

So I had one of my two 30-06 Baikal's converted to 30-30 Win by installing chamber adapters. I had adapters made and threaded/soldered into place. The adpaters work fine even with almost a 1/2 inch of freebore. I have fired 6 rounds into a 50 gal barrel of water to see if their was indication of the bullets not entering the bore in a concentric manner, their is no indictaion of keyholeing, and chrongraphing indicates the velocities are what is published for the factory loads i am shooting. I am shooting the factory Remington 170 grain SP Cor-lock and the Winchester 170 grain SP. Both rounds are shooting one inch groups at 50 yards from each barrel respectfully. All seems fine EXCEPT; the regulation is not going well, the right barrel is crossing six inches to the left of the left barrel. When i turn the jackscrew towards the buttstock instead of moving the point of impact to the right it moves it further to the left. When i rotate the jackscrew towards the muzzle i can reduce the spread to about four inches but run out of threads on the jackscrew. Not sure why the spread is so great; when the gun was a 30-06 i did not have any problem with the regualtion. I am contemplating regulating it the the old fashion way but thought someone here might have a suggestion that would save the use of the jackscrew system. Thanks in advance for any assistance

respectfully
WCF

If stuck with factory loads, you may be stuck! I would suggest trying 180gr. or 190gr. bullets in an attempt to get the regulation sorted out. The heavier bullets might make the barrels tend to diverge, rather than cross.

In that rifle, you should easily be able to make the 180's and 190's do the factory's 2,200fps. of the 170's- maybe a bit more.

Too - if you can get .375 Winchester brass, being stronger brass in the head and web area, making 30-30's from them will allow higher pressure than the .30-30 brass can take. Since the rifle was an '06, slightly higher pressures than the .30/30's 34,000CUP should be possible - if you are a knowledgeable handloader.

If not, please disregard this post.

Daryl
Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not a reloader. I decided to remove the muzzle block, and enlarge the opening for the right barrel which allowed me to shim it. I played around with difference shims until I got the barrels shooting bore width apart. I soldered both barrels to the muzzle block and all is well. At 50 yards my left and right groups are 1 1/2 inches, elevation is almost identical. At 100 yards my groups opened up to 2 3/4 with the right barrel almost 1 inch higher. For whitetail deer it should work fine.

WCF:
Might I also suggest that you try using a round nose bullet, my rifle was printing one shot 1-1 1/2" higher than the other, the round nose brought them together.
