Possible Mauser VZ 24 KURZ action
      #264196 - 26/04/15 03:57 AM

Johan Greyling showed me today what look like a Mauser 98 KURZ action...this action is at least 5 mm shorter than the standard action and has the following inscription on the left side of the receiver..I will try to duplicate the inscription ....it looked as follows:
(KURZ mauser 98 action VZ24) KPAIBFANNA JVROCIANABNJA BOJHOTEX. 3ABOA-KPARYJEBAIL...I would like to know more about this action and will upload photos on Monday...spesific measurements will be taken as well and uploaded.

IMO in this case it would be better to talk about "short intermediate action" because VZ24 do not have any real short(=kurz) action.

The cyrillic inscription reads as follows:

On the receiver ring : Kralijevina (factory) Jugoslavija (country)
On the left side wall :Voj.Teh.Zavod Kragujevac (Artillery Technical Institute,Kragujevac).

The designation was Model 24 . But the Designation VZ24(VZ means VZOR=Model) is for the Czech Model 24 reserved.
The Jugo Mod 24 was manufactured by FN (the first 100.000) and the rest on the FN machinery in Kragujevac.

The above mentioned cyrillic markings were attached in the production after 1931.
Concerning the action dimensions that model used it could be assorted to a mixture between Large ring standard length(i.e. common / normal / standard 98) and large ring intermediate length(for example the commercial 7x57 rifles or Peruvian 1909).Overall length of these intermediates were the same as the normal length. Guard screwholespacing also identical. But the bolt length shorter than he normal length actions.

Whereas the serbian was a large ring action , shorter bolt (same as the intermediate), however the action is 0.25 inch shorter than the standard .

Guard screwhole spacing 7.62 inches (Serbian)
7.835 inches (Standard 98)

Overall action length : 8.5 inches (Serbian)
8.75 inches(Standard).

So that action is slightly shorter but not a real Kurz action (which was only an exclusive commercial production line).

Justcurious

Thank you kindly for the excellent info, I really appreciate it...I will convey your reply to my friend , always a pleasure to get info from knowledgeable members. Is there any reason for the manufacturing of this specific action? Were they only made for a 7x57 caliber? Or any other shorter caliber?

Since it was designated for the VZ24 rifles , are they as good/strong as the VZ24 actions?

That action type was used by the military forces in 7x57 , 7,65x53 (Belgian or better known as Argentine) and mostly in 8x57 (.323).

Because the Jugo production used the FN delivered maschinery and production knowhow, I believe they were made as strong and reliable as any Czech VZ4 action.

Thank you, I may be using it to build a 7x57 Mauser walk/stalk rifle for bush-veld conditions and distances....I already have a 8x57 JS Mauser with a 30" inch step barrel...a shorter 7x57 will do just fine....
