Query on Rejointing Over and Unders & the Draw
      #262468 - 18/03/15 08:34 PM

Hi all,

I'm aware of the process required for rejointing a side by side gun, however can anyone tell me how the same is done for a Over and Under gun? The pin cant be replaced as the lugs the barrels rotate on are generally integral to the action body. Are the "hooks" built up via TIG welding perhaps?

And to go back to rejointing side by side guns, the way I see the process working the barrels are effectively being pushed back to restablish contact with the breech face (either by replacing the hinge pin or building up the hook). However by doing this the front of the rear lug is taken out of contact with the draw. So shouldn't the draw or lump be built up and fitted in the rejointing process to provide full contact again in the circle? I am aware of some guns having a replacebale hardened insert in the draw I presume to aid when rejointing, although what about guns without this feature?

I'd be interested to hear some thoughts!

Interesting question!

From experience with shotguns I can tell you that once the cross pin is enlarged and the barrels pushed back there is not provision for refitting on the circle. Which kind of casts doubt on the initial benefit of that process in the new SXS.

Double rifles may be different.

In OUs it depends on the type of lock up, whether it is the Merkel or Browning underbolt or the Boss type. On some Boss type actions there are prefitted contact points that can be replace to maintain the contact between barrel lugs and action body, such as the high end Rusian MCs, the Beretta SO and others. On the Merkel types there spce for building up the front of the bites to maintain contact.

Also worth mentioning is the French Sagittaire that does OK in calibers that include the 8mm with no side lugs at all. The barrels are held solely by the cross pins and the bifurcated bolt.
