Your favorite big bore bullets solid and expanding
      #261407 - 01/03/15 12:18 PM

We like the 300g and 400g A-Frames in our 375 H&H and 416 Rem. In my 500 Jeffery, I'm shooting 570g TSX's and 570g Barnes Banded Solids, though I have some 570g A-Frames I plan to try out when it warms up. How about you folks?

I like the Woodleigh Hydrostatics for solids, 235 in 375 and 400 grain in the 416 Rigby. Woodleigh 300grain soft nose in 375 and 410 grains 416 Rigby plus the 285 grain ACP in 375 and 365 ACP in the 416 Rigby. ACP's are a mono metal bore riding projectile made in Brisbane Aust.

I'm not sure I got one favourite...
Northforks are very nice bullets for 416 and 375 but expensive. I also bought some Barnes ttsx 250grain bullets to be used in 375 for reaching out there. Recently I sold off some Swift A-frames and bought Woodleigh PP and Norma Oryx to be used in 375 (disappointing accuracy with aframes) Woodleigh and Norma solids are great.

Trophy bonded bear claw and Sledge Hammer are very nice bullets but soo hard to come by. I wish Norma could come up with a tougher bullet for big game. Oryx is fine for a lot of animals - largest calibre is .375

Swift A-frames are nice bullets but often not the most accurate ones in my rifles. In smaller calibres I prefer Barnes ttsx, Nosler partition, Norma Oryx, Woodleigh PP or North Fork over Swift A-frames.
Cheers

Here's a solid vote for Woodleigh Weldcore RNSNs for just about everything nitro-express in the field, with Taipan RNSPs or Bruce Bertram's conventional SPs for the dirt bank at the shooting range.

In Australia they are more available and less expensive than most US offerings. Even if that were not the case, I would still use Woodleighs exclusively on large/dangerous game as they consistently deliver "every satisfaction" in the hunting field!

When I first starting using A-Frames in my 300RUM, could not get them to shoot as well..luckily I stumbled upon an article on the 300RUm where the guy was using Retumbo --went down and reloaded a few--changed everything..have been using them for over 12 years now out of that rifle..

My favorite bullets are Barnes Triple Shocks and Swift A-Frames when I am after bigger stuff..or heavy for caliber Scirrocco's when after elk or bear..have never had an issue.

Woodleigh RNSN bullets also work exceptionally well on deer.

I used woodleighs only in the .458, but it never got to run on game.. I just like how they looked, and i know if ever needed they'll perform flawlessly.

I use only Woodleigh's on big game, my experiences include using .338W, 9.3x62 & 416Taylor on large feral animals (buff, bulls, brumbies & donkeys). With each cartridge the weldcores expand rapidly while maintaining integrity to deliver a hammer blow with deep penetration. The FMJ Woodleigh's have also worked flawlessly for me. I plan to trial the newer Hydros next trip....

500 gr Woodleigh softs and solids in my 470, I love the big mushrooms.

Woodleigh 270 gr ppsn in my 375. Very effective for soft skinned big game.

I prefer the softs (rnsp) in the 470 for everything. They are almost always found under the hide on decent sized buffalo.

Have .375 sighted for 2 1/2" high @ 100 Meters with 225gr. Horn. SP's at 2,840fps.

The 300gr. Norma RN, 300gr. Sierra BT's and 300gr. Hornady Interbonds at 2,472fps strike the same spot.

The 270gr. TSX @ 2,650fps, along with 270gr.Speer BT's @ 2,550fps, strike 3" high at 100 meters - all bullets grouping within 1/2" horizontal dispersion.

My .243 Full Stock Ruger is zero'd 2.9" high same range with 95gr. SST's at 2,850/2,900fps for deer with it's 5-15X M3200.

I'm good to go for Whitetails and Elk (maybe Moose) in a week or so.

Maybe next year I'll take the 9.3x62 - I have a whack of 250gr. Old Style Barnes Spitzers (.032" jackets) for it and they seem to shoot fairly well.

I love the 235gn TSX in my 375. 400gn PP Woodleigh in the 458. A mate of mine is also a big fan of the 350 & 400gn TSX & Swift A frame in his 416 Ruger.

Due to family matters, I got one day of hunting this fall.

NEXT year, I'll use my new .243 Weatherby, 24" BL. with a decent scope - maybe the 6-24X M4200 side focus - yeah - finally bought a WTBY (swore that would NEVER happen) but it is in a "Normal" calibre. LOL.

Rule303, how do you find the light Woodleigh hydros - used any on buffalo? The first lot didn't feed at all well in my 9.3x64mm so I discontinued working up loads for them. I know they go brilliantly at boring through anything, the Mk2's with the 'caps' will overcome the feed issue now; would rather use them now than a conventional solid.
Woodies virtually all round for me.
9.3 286hn PP & FMJ (270gn Speers for light loads)
.404 400gn PP
500 3" 440gn BP & 570gn PP
