Yes it can. But - it would also make a smashing .358, 9.3 or .375!

I would choose .338, its bigger enough than .30 but not make yours rifle as a "potato thrower" as those bigger caliber would do.

I see your point, sort-of. I'm pretty sure, if loaded to the same breech pressure, the difference might be much less than you think. Too, if all were loaded with 225 or 250gr. bullets, the larger bores would be slightly faster, if all were loaded with the same weight bullets, which would compensate for the lower BC's over normal hunting distances.

9,3x53R used to be quite common caliber here in Finland after WWII. It's not really any long distance caliber but good choice when hunting moose in thick forest. But if you choose .338 bullet and a little "ackley" the x53 case same time when opening it you will get quite a nice caliber; some people here built one and they told that with 250 gr bullets they got, without any problem, speed like 2500 feet/sec. IMO it´s enough for a such short rimmed case.

A "good" substitute would be a .50/95 in a Uberti or Pedersoli Model 1976 Winchester. It wouldn't take huge pressure due to it's toggle link action but what a fantastic rifle, they are, to shoot. It will do a normal 2,000fps with a 300gr. Quote:
or 45/75 winchester which can be made from the 348 case

How well does the 444 Marlin work in the Siamese action ? Is the rim diameter the right size to fit the bolt face ? The 444 was always restricted to light or deeply seated bullets in the Marlin action. The Mauser could allow use of some real heavyweight bullet loads.

.444 Marlin's rim diameter .5140 inc (13.06 mm) seems to be a tad too small. Original 8x52R size is .561 (14,25 mm).

The 444 Marlin is a nice round, but it is not something that I would personally use in a Siamese Mauser action. The Siamese Mauser is much bigger and it is a reputably strong action. I have a lovely 45-70 custom heavy barreled Siamese Mauser gifted to me by Huvius. The actions that I have look capable of taking even bigger rounds. That's why this speculation . . .
I have also received some excellent advice from Master Gunsmith and forum member Steve Zihn. Hope to decide soon.
Thank you, everyone, and do keep the advice coming. Nothing is more delightful than the decision process leading to getting a gun built.
Good hunting, everyone!

The Siamese Mauser lends itself well to the .45-70 cartridge many such conversions were offered commercially. The slanted magazine accommodates rim cartridges for proper feeding.
