9.3x74R: SxS vs. O/U?
      #26108 - 11/02/05 02:31 PM

I said never again, but here I go. I’m looking for a double in 9.3x74R. I’ve tried three in the $2-5K range and of recent vintage in the last of years. Although the all were new guns with test targets, and I went to great effort to get the specific load and grain wt, none of the guns lived up to my expectations (<4”). Most groups were in the 8-12” range. Not acceptable given the money involved. I simply had no confidence in the guns. I gave up and have been looking for a M-S 1910 in 9.5 ever since.

Any thoughts on SxS vs. O/U? Are some brands better known for quality regulation? I’ve found a few O/U that had claw mounts, but no scope. Would this through off regulation? If so, would adding a scope of unknown weight help?

Finally, if you know of a well-regulated 9.3 for sale, or a 1910 in 9.5 for that matter, please advise.

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,

Greg

I have been very happy with my 9,3x74R Chapuis SxS.
It shoots very good with the iron sights and with both of the scopes I have for it. I use the Chapuis pivot QD mounts.
I have shot this rifle on paper and game to 300 yards.
Search for some of my previous posts.
It is my favorite hunting rifle under 40 cal.

Are you looking for used or new? I have two o/u in 9,3 and would sell one...keep the other.

Welcome to the forum, Kynoch.

It seems strange to me that you encountered 3 modern doubles that wouldn't hold better than 8-inches at 100-yards! I believe you were just unlucky: most will do much better than that. Most old Brit SxSs, even those with a century of wear and abuse, will do better than that! I wouldn't give up just yet!

Most of us here would prefer the SxS configuration, it has a number of advantages in the hunting field, but the O/U (if you must!) is probably at its best with the 9.3x74R chambering.

Mind you, if you were to abandon the search for a good double, you could certainly do a lot worse than the 9.5 Mannlicher Schoenauer!

I have had 2 Valmet O/U's in 9.3x74R and one Chapuis SxS and have had excellant accuracy from all. Groups under 2" in all cases. With scope as I'm not that good with irons . My 100yd groups with irons run usually about 4"/5". I can sometimes keep my 50yd irons in 2". Used Valmet mounts on the Valmets and custom Ruger on the Chapuis. Since my Iron groups are not so good I can't tell you how the scope effects accuracy.

My FN-Browning o/u shoots both bbls. in 1 hole at 50 m. It had to be re-regulated when I had it scoped and I assisted when the operation took place. My gunmaker was very cooperative (and patient) for he had to de-, resolder the bbls. several times + move the wedge + test-shoot until I was satisfied. BTW, it proves "they" can do it when they work at it...

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.
