Czar's first roe search
      #26060 - 11/02/05 01:43 AM

Last night, I shot a doe in a woods opening at 170 m. Night was falling and I was blinded by the muzzle flash, so I didn't see her fall. Light was fading quickly, so I went to my not so distant car to get Czar, my lab. I put him on the trail and he locked on it, finding the deer quickly. He was excited and danced all around it. I felt so proud of him that I nearly danced myself...

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

Well done to Czar.

Sometimes it is just as much fun watching one's dog have fun as the hunt itself. They do get excited by game, gun oil and rifles.

The next dog I get will probably be a black lab.

Andre - I saw your picture and appreciate your dogs acheivement, especially if he did not receive any formal training. I have a DD (Deutsch-Drahthaar) which is basically a refined version of the German Wirehaired pointer. The DD's have been bred to a different and higher standard for the last 100 years . You can trace the lineage of your dog back 100 years . All dogs must pass ability tests before they are allowed to breed. One of the tasks that they must perform before they get their utility dog certification is a blood track of 400 meters on a leash. They can then go onto a cold 20 hour track and a cold 40 hour track.
If they have the right temprament and a good nose it is amazing what they can be trained to do.

Best Regards.

Czar has no formal bloodhound training, only flushing and retriever work on small game (his first real season). However, I have lots of Roedeer on my lease and he developed a passion for them, tracking their spoors into the bushes until he flushes them. He then starts a chase but, fortunately, he'll stop at a single whistle blast. This was his first real tracking and it was not premeditated, I got him out of the car as an afterthought for fear of losing the deer in the falling night.
