Looking for advice on Calibers for two barrel set build.
      #259079 - 16/01/15 11:26 AM

Hello,
New member here and I am gearing up to start a takedown Mauser build that will be a two barrel set. I have seen some good threads on takedown Mausers on the Nitro Express Boards.

I originally just wanted to design and build a takedown, but then I figured to add to the purpose of a takedown and have a second barrel in the mix. Double the work, I know.

I primarily work on Classic Double guns, but I have a real appreciation for early 20th century European built Mauser Sporting rifles.

I am starting with an Interams Mark X action that was originally a 30.06 caliber.

I have started some of the initial work needed on the action for the build, but before I go much farther, I am wanting to nail down what I am going to do for calibers.

I was thinking one barrel for deer/big game and the other in a smaller varmant caliber. My original thoughts were .270 Win and 22-250 Rem.

My concern is making sure that the action will feed both rounds with no issues, so my thoughts were to choose two that are as similar to each other in size. The 30.06 is .473 Rim diameter and most popular cartridges are also .473 Rim diameter or very close so I am good there from a bolt face/extractor standpoint. But the length of the cartridges as compared to each other is my concern.

The action's starting caliber (30.06) is 3.34" overall length. Most all others are going to be shorter than that, so reducing the size of the mag box might be a given.
I am kind of using the 22-250 Rem as my starting point and then trying to find a good bigger game cartridge that is close enough.

22-250 Rem is 2.35" overall length and case length of 1.91".

.308 Win: 2.80" / 2.01"
.270 Win: 3.34"/2.54"
6.5x55mm: 3.15" / 2.16"
.280 Rem: 3.33" / 2.54"
.257 Roberts: 2.77" / 2.23"
7x57mm: 3.07" / 2.24"

Based on a quick survey like this, it looks like the .308 Win or other calibers in that family might be the best match to the 22-250 Rem as far as dimensions.

Any other suggestions?

Would the .5" difference in overall length cause major issues in cycling both rounds well in the same action?

Thanks

The bolt face is one issue, so any of your shell is fine, but the taper of the case is another factor, so I would not try a 06 case with a 22-250.

Even the 308 can be a bit of a problem when using a 98 Mauser and to get the feed angle of the 25-06/ 270/ 280 30-06 or 338-06 to work with the 243, 260 7-08 and 308 may be a pain.

So if I were you I would probably go with a 270 and a 6MM Remington.

That combination will work well and be trouble free.

There's a good range of cartridges based on the 8x57 case, which would allow not only the same head size and length but the same case taper, to work through the same feed rails. 5.6x57 for smaller game and 7x57 for deer and other bigger game perhaps? Or perhaps 6mm Rem and 8x57?

9.3 x 62 and 270 Winchester is a combination that is reasonably often used in two barrel sets for Mausers and other rifles. Hartman and Weiss have made this combination before and still do now. The cases are so similar that they will both feed without any problems and as they are the same length and bolt face as the 30-06, they will fit nicely in the magazine and can use the same follower with maybe a small amount of modification.

What method are you going to use to lock the barrels and the fore-end ?

My plan for the barrel is the leave it full threaded so it will turn off. I have made an additional lug to attach to the existing receiver recoil lug that will give me more surface area to attach a steel plate to. There will then be a matching steel plate attached to a lug on the barrel.

I am leaning towards using a spring loaded check ball on the plates as a locating point for the barrel. Then a pin driven by a finger latch on the bottom of the for end for actual locking of the barrel. I plan on re-purposing a Browning Superposed latch for this. I like that latch because it clips in firmly, but when unhooked it is free and loose. That way the locking pin will stay retracted for barrel removal.

Sounds feasible, however I think I would prefer the Savage barrel nut version of quick take-off barrels. Some of the fellows over on a small bore (Wildcat) forum I frequent have found this successful for their dual barrel rifles. ONe of them, a few years back, had 3 actions, magnum, standard and short. He had some 40 different calibre barrels fitting those three actions, ranging from .17 Fireball on up to .450 Watts.
