Water Buffalo vs Scrub Bull

If any of you were going on a OZ buffalo hunt and had a choice of either taking two trophy water buffalo or taking one trophy water buffalo and a scrub bull, what would you do? The cost is very similar either way.

Shoot buff bull first. While hunting hard for a second buff bull if you encounter scrub bull you will answer your own question with a little help from adrenalin.

I suppose it depends on whether you want two of the same trophies or two different ones, as suggested, get a good buff first and if you are happy with that then go for a scrubber, if not you may be able upgrade the buff trophy for a better one

I would go one of each. Scrub Bulls as well as getting horns you can get a nice skin, especially if you put in the time looking for a big brindle bull with nice colour. They can also be a really fun hunt and depending on where you hunt they can be fairly wary and a challenge to stalk. One good example of each will be a satisfying hunt with a variety of trophies to take home.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely would like to take both. There are just not many videos, ect. showing scrub bull hunting. I was just wondering what kind of hunt it would be. I've read that they can be fairly aggressive. More so than the buffalo it would appear. Is that true?

I may have some video footage which I have never even looked at. Like most video footage including a lot from Africa, never watched it. Could be Emmy worth materail! I dislike watching myself on videos. If the scrub bull video was well taken, I doubt it was though, as the guys were getting their rifles ready when the scrub bull came running down the hill to see who or what had pricked its arse with a 480 gr Woodleigh ... you would hear Graham Williams saying "Wal, get your 416 ready, it is coming ..." though.

I would do what the fellows above recommend, take a water buff bull first, then decide, which.

Who are you hunting with? ie charges the same prices for both species?

How much does it cost to have a skin done? And can you get water buff done also?

I'm not 100% sure when or who I will go with. I've talked extensively with Matt Graham with Hunt Australia and Matt Kellman with Australia Wide Safaris. If I'm not mistaken, Australia Wide offers a Scrub bull for a similar price as a water buff. Both seem like quality operations.

I don't think you would want a buff skin rug, course , brissly sometimes sparse hair, yuck! ! Where as you can get some nice scrub bull skins.

I kept a flat skin from a scrub bull that I thought was beautiful (in the field) - got it back home from the tannery - not so!!

Having neither, I would opt for each. Adding to the Bovine tally on ones wall, so to speak.

Yeah, I'm not much into a skin of any sort. It's the adventure and thrill of the hunt that excite me more so than the trophy itself.I would probably either do a shoulder mount or skull mount. But, with that being said, I would definitely prefer a trophy bull. Something about a huge body and wide horns does something for me!
