Britain to slaughter recreated Aurochs - why not hunt them?
      #258765 - 08/01/15 03:53 AM

We've discussed the recreated Aurochs from Germany and how tough and aggressive the beasts are. Turns out that their aggressiveness is a problem in the UK, and the authorities plan to slaughter the cattle. Why not allow hunting? There still are large open spaces in Scotland where hunting is popular.Perhaps, Aurochs could be one more quarry?

I saw them on the news as the fella was walking in with them with a bucket of feed in his mitt.

No shit... Sounds like they started developing this breed well ahead of the rise of the Nazi party.
I suppose since Hitler was a vegetarian, you could call that a Nazi diet!

It's claimed these cattle were extremely aggressive, too much so to be farmed. I can't imagine Britain's occupational safety and health allowing them to be released into the countryside. Actually, their finest hour from their perspective is probably when they said "no" to something.

Don't you love the nonsense about them being "Nazi" cattle? As if they were somehow related to Mengele or Eichman? Yes, the Heck brothers started developing the aurochs well before the Nazis took over, and they had perfected the breed by 1932 according to Larousse's "La Vie Des Animaux."

I wish our good friends in Britain would be able to offer hunts on private estates in their country. would be fantastic if they could.

Good one Gryph. They don't let facts get in the way of a "good" story.

The original aurochs were wild cattle and I doubt could be farmed as domestic cattle either. What is the point of breeding "tame" aurochs anyway?

Yep if they were wild enough and not fed from buckets would make good hunts on a large enough estate. Something different anyway.

The outback cattle I doubt would pass Britian's muster as tame enough for their 'little' cattle farms as well.

I suspect farming in England would be in trouble the first time someone from the government got chased around the barnyard by an Ayrshire bull who thought he was spending too much time gazing at the harem. I've personally been mauled twice by cows. Yes. Milkcows. It's not just the bulls. But Bovine males can hold a grudge. They don't just want to kick your ar*se. They want to make sure you know they haven't forgot you. More than one bull has been shot up here after he "turned". Don't know what makes 'em do it. The cows usually are protecting the young when they get ugly. The bulls are territorial I guess. Some just get p*ssed off one day and go off the deep end. I've lost good neighbors to their tame dairy and beef cattle. Wild cattle are true dangerous game. Wasn't it Capstick who described a male Cape buffalo as looking at him like he owed him money? It'll give you the chills. Norman4

The trouble with re Brits is that they like their landscape nicely ordered with all the wildlife neatly in its place. We are terrified of anything that might bite, stomp or generally misbehave. Look at all the fuss regarding Wild Boar which have now re established themselves, and don't get me started on crofters whinging about getting paid if their worthless scruffy sheep become food for sea eagles.

Wild cattle were here till our civil war, and still old breeds such as chillingham park cattle are in existence. Biggest nay Sayers are actually game keepers and neighbouring landowners.

As regards hunting them, it would have be a canned hunt within an enclosure and can't really see the fun in that.

The worse dairy bull I've seen, is the Holstein. They sure know how to use those long, curved horns & they are BIG. My Uncle Bill was badly gored by his Holstein bull back in the early 50's - up until he 'turned' vicious he'd been like a pet then threw uncle Bill out of the field on a horn.

Reminds me of the joke - farmer to the government man - "show him your licence, show him your licence"

I spent 35years in the A.I industry and by far the worst offender for a bad attitude was the Jersey bull. My boss was badly mauled by one while collecting semen from him. Yea and no joke's please!!
I've heard them all.

Bob

Maybe they ought to cross them with those African Angkoli cattle [spelling?] the horns on those cattle have to be seen to be believed ,evidently they are very docile ,amazing horns though
