A typical Indian gun shop

A search on Google took me to this shop in Bombay, a place I have visited some years ago. It is typical of an Indian gun shop these days, the grand shops in Calcutta and Madras having closed down. I'll try and get pictures from them shortly.

Thanks for the link, Mehul. Now that I see the pic, I recall meeting the gentleman at his shop a couple of times.

Was hardly earning anything then and recall being shocked at the prices of some imported gun oil, leave alone the guns.

I will be in Bombay tomorrow and time permitting would like to make the trek to Rusi Jijina's Bombay Gun House. If I do manage it, I will write about it here. Not sure if he would permit a stranger to take pics in his shop though.

Regards,

Rustam

Hello Rustam,

This man's brother Hanzala Bandukwala also has a nice shop.

If you meet Rusi Jijina tell him Hi from me. You can't meet a more informed dealer in India than him. I doubt he ever sells any guns - his liquor store which is just below his gun shop is what gives him his income - and this is just one way to retain the huge stock of guns.

I have had a number of cups of tea with him on many occasions while drooling over some superb rifles and shotguns.

Good hunting!

Mehul, how do prices compare in India - is it worth a visit ? And how easy is it to export a gun/rifle from India ?

MacNaughton,

India still has a few bargains but you have to be able to bargain like an Indian. The Bombay gunshops are nice and they probably do more business than shops in Central India though there are some superb shops in Delhi.

Exporting any gun made after 1890 is not a problem at all. The dealer has to get a No Objection Certificate from customs and he then hands the rifle over to the airline who then submit it to the customs at the destination.

Several members on these forums have bought a number of treasures in India from private correspondence that I've had with them, one of them has 150 guns from India. My feeling is that the newer South African laws would see more guns coming from there as they have severe restrictions on gun ownership there these days and some Indians might just decide to hang on to their big bores because the Supreme Court threw out the caliber restrictions in November 2003.

Good hunting!

Supreme Court threw out the caliber restrictions in November 2003.

Mehul,

Request some insight. What exactly was the case ?

Sujay
