Collection to hunt the world over??
      #25818 - 07/02/05 01:34 PM

What do you think would be a good collection of rifles to hunt the world over and have the best rifle and caliber suitable for all the different species and sizes of game?

Also im not asking the best 2 or 3 all around rifles, what I am asking here for example is best beanfield rifle, woods rifles, mountain rifle, dangerous game rifle etc.
like best antelope/whitetail, then maybe caribou/elk size,
then like grizzly/moose buffalo/ elephant sheep/goats etc. etc.

just want to see what everyone thinks...

Africam Big Five

.416 Rigby- Magnun Mauser
.405Win.- Winchester 1895
.375H&H-Mauser 98 or Winchester 70
.300H&H-Mauser 98 or Winchester 70

Rest Of World
.375H&H and .338Win for Big Game (Water Buffalo,Moose, Grizzly/Polar Bear, Tiger etc.)

.30/06-Mauser 98 or Winchester 70 etc -Large Deer etc
.270Win-Any decent rifle bolt or Single shot,
Kangaroos,Goats etc
.308Win.-Savage 99,Browning BLR ,Winchester 88 lever action these are great for pigs
.223Rem-Bolt or Single shot for fox, rabbit, crow etc
.22WMR- As Above

12G- Double Shotgun ,for everything that flies.

Of course there would be some overlap of calibres and I have picked available proven "classic" calibres not these super ultra short magnum barrel burners!and if someone wants to use a .470NE on Deer or pigs go for it!

Ridgerunner
I'll bite but I don't need 15.

22LR for plinking/practice
223 for varmits
30-06 for everything short of dangerous game
375 H&H for dangerous game.
All in bolt action with scopes - Dakota or Winchester MOd 70.

add a 12 Ga. pump and you are done.

Terry

This doesn't include the other 20 or so guns that I need just for fun.

some of these I have and some I will have, unless I change my mind in the meantime.

.22, .22 Mag, .17 HMR, .222 - small game hunting, all bolt actions.

12 gauge - various side by sides - waterfowl, quail, rabbits, pest birds, clays

12g / .222 combination - small game
plus a 12 g / 7mm or 9.3mm for medium sized game plus shottie for versatility

6.5x68 Sauer Takedown - mountain and plains rifle if light enough for the "Tops". Deer hunting, goats, pigs. No end of uses.

8x68S Sauer Takedown - "world" trophy hunting rifle, African plains game

10.5x68 (custom) Sauer Takedown - a .416 x68 (not the 10.75x68) - to add a DGR to the Sauer Takedowns versatility.

.308 BLR - brush hunting and a light sambar rifle. Pigs.

.30-06 M98 - because it was my first and does most of it with no fuss.

.375 H&H Mag M98 - same as the .30-06

.450 No 2 NE Double - DGR

9.3x74mm Rimmed Double (scoped) - for fun - plains game plus a little extra if it is ever needed. Sambar as well.

.500/.416 Double (scoped) - a plains game and DGR in one. Why would one need anything else.

***

A definite theme is 'takedowns" either doubles or takedown bolt actions. For ease and unobtrusive travel.

TerryR,
I think what you said sounds perfect except for I would throw in a true big bore double from 470 on up.

and then just like you said another 20 or so just for fun

A Merkel 9.3x74R/12ga76/12ga76 with 22LR barrel insert and Briley chokes inc tubes modified to put Brennekes on the rifle barrel point of aim with 320gn Woodleighs.

And a Mauser 66 with 243 barrel sighted for 55gn Nosler Ballistic Tips @ 4,000fps, 30-06AI 165gn Barnes @ 2,950, 9.3x64 with Woodleigh 286gn softs and solids @ 2600 and 458WM with rim rebated to .496 so can use standard bolt face 500gn @ 2120 (22" barrel).

Both are doable at under $A10,000 and I'm working on getting both together before our gun laws limit us to some ridiculous low number of firearms.
